I am upgrading my Lightroom to v2.x and am wondering if I should also upgrade my CS2 to CS3 (save $50 on bundle). I understand that CS4 is supposed to be announced this month, and am wondering if there will be a free update to it from CS3 purchased now.

Anyone know?

Adobe will not give you a free bump to CS4 from CS3, no. They will, however, only ask you to grab your knees rather than your ankles and charge you a reduced 'upgrade' price for CS4 if you have an older version.

Well if the upgrade will be the same price in 2 weeks as it is now ($199), it isn't exactly free - sure, I can hold out until CS4, but what advantage is that for them? Wouldn't they rather have the money now? Why would anyone upgrade now, if they will have to upgrade again (for more money) in two weeks? I know that with other companies I have received gratis upgrades for new products/upgrades purchased within a month of a new release.

Of course, I can't get through to Adobe Sales to find out for sure.

whats funny is that you all bash on adobe for this, like they would never do that when actually they did do it from cs2 to cs three if purchased within a month of the release date. Contact adobe on monday, and find out directly from the source

Be careful--Adobe will announce CS4 on 9/23, but the release date may be 3 months in the future (IIRC it was about three months for the CS3 release from the announcement.)

From my post to another thread.

At Photoshop World last Thursday, Adobe announced they would announce CS (wink & snicker) Next ... aka CS4 on September 23 ... and demonstrated it. Jaw dropping performance on large files (think 200 MB - 2 GB files) on a PC with modest processor power. If I hadn't seen it, I would not have believed it. They claim they've made some things easier. There's better integration with formerly Macromedia programs (e.g. Flash, Dreamweaver, et al). And a few whiz bang features like the aforementioned content aware scaling.

If you have CS2 or prior, I'm pretty sure it will be worth the upgrade. If you have CS3, it may depend on the stuff above whether you're interested.

I don't think I was bashing Adobe, just trying to find out the "skinny" - which I just did.

According to Adobe Sales, if I upgrade from CS2 to CS3 now, all I need to do is call sales after the announcement, ask for a "post announcement upgrade" and they will send me the CD upgrade to CS4 for the cost of shipping - $6 or so. I think that is totally fair, and I agree with you that there is really no reason for criticism of Adobe at this point.

To make things even sweeter, if you now own PSCS2, PSCS or PS7 and Lightroom 1x, you can get $50 off if you upgrade them both. The total upgrade for the two is $248. The details are here. The discount is given at checkout. I didn't have a promotional offer code, and it doesn't appear that one is needed. However, the sales rep gave the code to me which is PSLTRMBNDL08 (next to last is a "zero" not O). He was not aware of the offer until I pointed it out to him.

So, in essence, I am getting a $50 discount on the upgrade to PSCS4. I like that!

its up to up if you want to wait for cs4 but it could be several months... and yes adobe do give away free upgrades, but normally only if you buy the previous version with a month or so of the new version being released

I got cs3 that way, ordered cs2.3 a couple of weeks after the launch of cs3... had to ring adobe with my cs2.3 serial number and they sent me a free upgrade to cs3, but they might not do the same with the release of cs4, so take you chances!

If you read my last post (not the bumps) you will see that they are still doing that. Just the cost of mailing the new PSCS4 on CD.
