Well, back in 2006 I liked a photograph on DP Challenge. Back then the photograph even won the DP challenge.

That time I thought how the user would have created so much of softness in the picture. Since I was novice in Photoshop, I din't asked around.
But now since I know a little about Photoshop, I still can't make heads and tails out of it.
Can anyone please explain me, how did the Photographer achieved so much of softness and smoothness in the picture?

I can get a similar look by creating a duplicate layer and doing a gaussian blur between 10 and 25. Then I play around with the layer blending modes. Multiply usually gives the best effect, but Soft Light, Hard Light, Overlay, Burn and Screen can also give some interesting and cool effects. It's very similar to the Orton Effect.

Using Neat Image on a 640-720 pixel image can give you similar results at times. It varies per picture. I'd second looking up "Orton effect" and trying out the steps listed.
