From the Photoshelter Collection front page:

"Effective 10/10/2008, The PhotoShelter Collection will discontinue stock photo licensing.

We've made a strategic decision to focus our efforts on enhancing our original product, The Personal Archive.

* Official Statement
* Corporate Blog
* FAQs: Photographers | Image Buyers"

That totally sucks. As a relative stock newbie, I really liked their interface and web design. I especially enjoyed watching and submitting stuff for the "research requests" -- that was like another photo challenge... that actually paid money! Major bummage. Guess I've got to finally get off my duff now and put together something for alamy. :P

Wow that does suck. I loved everything about their uploading and keywording. I loved their fresh approach to selling stock too. I bet the forums will be going nuts over there. Thanks for the info.

Edit to add: How weird that this happened on 9/11.

Well they certainly blew a lot of $ pretending they wanted to take on the stock world :shrug:

I'm at Photoshelter exclusively with a whopping 12 photos. Liked it a lot there and was planning on uploading tons more eventually. oh well.

Huh-huh... Well, not for long; looks like they figured out a way to squelch that:

"Friday Sept 12

Laaaaaaaaaaaame...

Hvae you tried that yet? I don't think I had any up, but when I tried to look at any personal pages, I just kept getting the "letter."

One good thing I can take from the experience is having some images vetted and approved by photo editors at a "non-micro" site -- I think I will take some of the ones they approved and try again at Alamy ...

One of the commenters on the blog recommended this site as well:

yep sad to see them go. i thought the "shoot the day" was a great idea. did anyone here take part? it seemed to me that they should have gotten a big infusion of unique and fresh content but it apparently doesn't look that way. i wonder how bad sales could have been. anyone have any anecdotes about how bad the sales were?

i wish them the best of luck in their other business.

Here is a blog post I wrote over at Cutcaster about it.

I led the Phoenix, AZ group for that. Turned out to be a HUGE sink of my time, but it brought a lot of great photographers together, and I made a really great friend in one photog I might have never met otherwise. Got some cool shots from that day and subsequent related shoots also -- that'll all be heading over to alamy shortly. ;)

I'm a bit ticked that apparently they didn't follow-through with any of the group prizes for the Shoot! The Day, or if they did, they haven't informed anyone of anything. I haven't seen anything regarding what, if anything, the photo winners actually won either, other than recognition -- only 3-or-so days before the site announces they are closing down. Kind-of a slap in the face to those who put all that together and worked hard to make some great photos.

In general, I'm really bummed they didn't give it more time. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of details we will never hear, but from what little details we do have, it just seems rather premature to "give up" on it so soon. I don't know if they were bleeding capital, had legal issues, or what... I've got to think there was some specific driver behind it besides just giving up. At least, I really hope there was. We may never know.

Sucks.

its all very strange and sad. i guess getty and alamy are the big winners in this all and we are back to where we began ;-(

I have to say -- I'm really quite upset with Photoshelter. I just got accepted about two weeks ago and was uploading a ton of images into their queue. Instead of wasting all that time, I could have been out shooting. Why don't they give the photographers any notice? There were no hints this was happening and their forum admins kept talking about how they were going to fix the stats and other related items at the end of the week. Why lead people on like that?

Furthermore, I'm more bummed about the loss of the outlet for some of my photos which wouldn't work well for Alamy. Some of my older shots just wouldn't upsize well or needed more cropping that would take them out of the Alamy size requirements. These were perfect for Photoshelter. Now I guess these just sit on my hard drive as I refuse to submit to Microstock sites.

Oh well. It's sad really but at the same point, if they only expected to give it a year trial in the marketplace, they should have told people. That's a ridiculously small amount of time in such a large field of businesses. Oh well. It's their money they wasted...

>:| well since photoshelter is gone..... I went back to shutterstock took me forever to figure out my password there.... finally logged in and come to find out I had money sitting there... So its back to shutterstock for me I will be using them for now on...

hey mjwood0...why not try Cutcaster, which is not microstock, midstock or macrostock. You have the control for how you want to price your work, which is more fair because you know how much work and time went into producing the images.

I think that PS gave the photographers until Oct. 10 which seems like a fair amount of time. Who am I to know though bc I wasn't uploading content to the site or actively contributing. Also who knows when they made that decision or told forum moderators. It must have been really painful and one everyone was sad to see. Did you participate in the "Shoot the Day?" I really liked that idea for bringing the community together off-line, educating people and creating a whole crop of new content. Great idea but I haven't heard too much feedback on it.

yeah, cutcaster seems to be a hot new site. Not too many sales yet, but they do have an enthusiastic staff.

Here is a pile of cutcaster threads

This sounds like a great idea but I need to ask. If I were head of an advertising firm I would instruct my employees to buy the images they need from the cheapest source possible. With today's microstock sites easily having over four million images why would I go to a site like Cutcaster to acquire images for my work? I'm sure I could find ten images from every site that would most probably do for what I have in mind so I ask, why would I spend much more money at Cutcaster or Allamy for instance, when I could get similar images elsewhere for very cheap?

eta. I understand the exclusivity of Allamy and other sites but i'm talking more about general advertising, nothing too specific.

Is anyone else using the Personal Archive? I decided to give it a shot with the extra 10G of space for free they are offering when signing on. I still really like the layout, so I'm going to stick with them for a year, try and sell from their site, and see where it gets me.
