i've been riding up and down from this all day... i'm Very pleased with the comments... there is a slight issue with my picture in terms of opinion... some really like what I have done and Some really don't... i'm aware of what I have done, and I chenged it back and foreth 20 times before submitting it... but, for this style of picture, i think what I have done suits it well... not for other styles, but for this Particular category, I think it's better this way...
BUT BUT BUT... if it were advanced editing, i would make some adjustments to make it more "correct", although in basic when you want to change one part of your image, unfortunately, the other parts are forced to change too... so it's VERY hard to find a happy medium...

Thanks again for all the Wonderful and Helpful Comments!!!

--pokes you-- that better not be a complaint about a score that is 6.+ *hehe* :-) ;) you definatly got the blue unless someone is hiding with a 7.+ 'round here... :)

When scoring the photos, I do keep an open mind and actually prefer the outside the box images that get on the edge of the challenge theme. For some though, as in this challenge, where the photo itself does not tell the story/fit the theme/make the metaphor/ect without the title, I vote down accordingly.

How do the rest of you feel about this?

I try to follow the same guidelines that you mentioned. As long as a picture does justice to the challenge requirements (even if it does so loosely) it deserves a good score. However, there are other aspects to a picture too. I am sure gurus out here have their own scoring criteria as I have seen. I try to follow a hybrid method (may be very common), which goes something like:

* screening: check whether the image follows the challenge theme and directions. If it does, I move onto the next steps. If not, I would comment explaining why I think so, and award an average magic number (not high, not low).

- technical detail: scene composition (camera position/camera angle/lighting)
- technical detail: use of focus/contrast/DoF/Color/shutter speed/aperture etc. to strengthen the depiction
- aesthetic detail: two pictures that have the same above strengths can still attract a viewer differently. This is the tricky one, because it is subjective. If an image appeals strongly to me, it will get a high score in this section.

P.S. This is just my opinion, not claimed as perfect, and I will keep evolving it the more I learn.

i tend to ignore titles until after I decide on a vote- then look at the title and sometimes comment on it but I don't allow a title to affect my voting personally -- its a photography contest not a title contest after all :-)

I vote on photos by what I think looks good and I will knock off 1 point from my vote if the image DNMC. Why on earth shouldn't people be marked down for not meeting the challenge? The challenges are themed after all, if you don't stick to the theme, then it's your own fault really if you get slapped with a bunch of DNMC comments. I have no problem chopping off a point here and there if an image doesn't fit the challenge; as Prash said, the challenges have definitions to be followed. If you have issue with abiding by the rules and sticking to themes, you're on the wrong site.

I mean, if you went to the hospital to get your appendix out and the doctor removed your spleen instead and his excuse was "I was working 'outside the box'!" or "I was trying to be creative with your surgery!" would that be Ok with anyone? I doubt it.

All that said, I feel that while some photos very clearly do NOT meet the challenge at all, some are a bit of a grey area. For example, taking a photo of a tomato for a vegetable-themed challenge technically DNMC but you can see why a person would not be marked down for it. If someone else takes a photo of a cute bunny lying sleeping and calls it 'Too Much Lettuce', that is clearly a shoehorn job and while the photographer might think it meets criteria because the title says so, it simply does not. So, if there is even a little bit of grey-area material in your picture, you will get somebody telling you it DNMC. That's par for the course if you want to walk the edges of the challenge theme.

You'd think my score would be higher considering the 24 comments I've got, none of which are bad. *Sigh*

Well, you have me beat Tammy! I think I will be getting the brown, as I predicted, as I've been sitting at 4.6xx for quite some time. I just realized something that could have made my image better, but it's too late now. This won't be my all time low, but close. :-( OK, time to think about something for the next challenge - Maybe a waterdrop picy - would that be risky or safe?

I've got 18 comments so far - more than I've ever had in a challenge - but most are to question the validity of the place of the image in this challenge - GRIN!

Still I'm SO GLAD to hear from people - at least I know what they're thinking and why my beautiful image is under 5!
