Sort of begs the question what is the point then, if it makes no difference on who wins. Instead of giving people points just for showing up, why not take average of top 5 scores and fill the blanks with 0's if 5 weren't entered.

I think it should just be the top 4 scores each week, period. PLUS one designated scorer. And each team member has to be the designated scorer at least once in the season.

Like a golf match.

I understand that I can not please everyone and there are many different ways to score this whole thing. I also understand that not everyone will like it up front but I promise it's not as bad as it seems. It's a fair system and it allows everyone to play on level ground. Just wait until you see it in action.

Maybe next season I will let you help me come up with a new scoring system and we'll see how everyone likes it.

Well, that was if you used the score instead of the +/- average that you'd originally suggested. That would be the best and most fair.

Our team will still be in obviously, but it's disappointing you chose the weaker and less fair scoring method. After a week or two, when Poland is ahead, people are gonna be less inspired to take part.

Oh well, it's your deal. :)

DD, I think this works well... and it is fair... no system is going tob e perfect and there will always be someone around to complain about it, but the fact of the matter is that better teams win... because they're better.

Feel free to start your own tournament which implements your fairer and stronger rules.

The rest of us will enjoy this tournament, and will still be shooting even if Poland is ahead.

Dirt_Diver, thanks a lot for your hard work on this.

Hey now, watch the nasty attitude dude.

HE, DD led us to believe that was the scoring method to be used. Pay attention.

Actually, the way I understood it, when I signed up, is that he was considering different ways of scoring it. One method was talked about, but I never had the impression that it was the final one to be used -- just one under consideration.

Can't we all just get along, lol

Yeah, but when ended up with the same old scoring system as before.

Again, I was clear, it doesn't matter, it's his deal and he can do whatever he wants. I'm still in.

Get along? Where's the fun in that? ;oP

If you don't want to get along, go to the rant forum and check out the two main political threads, US election and Canadian election threads. Now there's some fun.

That's the way I understood it also... geesh, give DD a break, it's not like he's getting paid to do this. Let's all just take pictures and have some fun... and maybe be a little more grateful to DD for all the time and effort he is putting into this.

No, the last system only awarded points to the top 5 teams (or 6, or 3, or something).

Now, every team will get *some* points, based on placement (if I understood correctly).

That, in and of itself will make a difference, I believe.

Alex, We need to "talk". Im just not sure that im ready to take this whole thing to the next level. Ok, so maybe I have some "commitment issues," but hey, who doesnt? right? =^D

ETA: I was an advocate of having more even scoring system/teams as well. This is like picking a dodgeball team at lunch right? That being said, DD has put a good amount of thought into this and seems to work at it daily. So lets give it a shot and see how it ends up. Then in DPCO-IV we just wont let poland enter! =^) Maybe well try a new style then or something.

But, the point is to shoot and that this gives us an inspiration to enter challengers. Also, as i understand it, all teams get points ranging from 16 to 1 and things will fluctuate.

Let's all keep in mind that your team ends up with only 1/8 of a point for your participation - a small bonus indeed but large enough to break a tie.
09/11/2008 05:10:25 PM · #39
I have to agree with Hawkeyelonewolf on this. I did not enter dpcoII because of the scoring system. I agreed to enter dpcoIII because of dirtdiver's assertion that it would be scored with a bonus based on beating your average, which gives an advantage to those of us with lower skill levels.

So now that I have joined I find out that the very reason I wanted to join this is not going to happen? That is just plain wrong and misleading. Sorry to be blunt but it is true.

If this is not done with average bonuses then I am out. Plain and simple. It was the way it was proposed, and what we all agreed to, you cannot change the very premis that the good folks joined up on. :(

Here is dirtdiver's original post in the "Time for dpcoIII" thread: " am going to jump right in and get started on the DPO-III...

Start date is going to be 16 Sept.

Instead of 8 weeks the DPCO will be 12 weeks long. It will be the same type of challenges that we have been doing (open challenges) that way everyone can participate.

Teams will have 8 people on a team with no more than 16 teams.

I'm not sure how I want to calculate the scores yet but it will be something like Scott has in the FSM. (I'll explain later)

anything I am missing now I will edit to add later.

Any questions?
"

I agree, and am fine with the way Dirt Diver's got it set up. I would hope that everyone who signed up for DPCO did so to enter challenges and improve their technique. This encourages teammates to shoot each week, thereby potentially increasing the team's average score. If people weren't planning to submit most, if not all weeks, I'm surprised they'd sign up. Sure, conflicts will come up for most everyone, but I think we'll get more participation with the O points in play.

Sheesh... sounds like everyone needs to take a chill pill :P
This is DD's gig, I say we do it his way or don't participate at all. He's put a lot of work into this - I for one really appreciate it.

Thanks DD.

Just to be clear, do I as a team member have to deal with the scoring in any way at all or is that down to team captain or Dirt_Diver? Cos I suck royally at maths of any sort.

If it bothers you then let me rephrase: Because I am most terribly useless when it comes to the complexities of mathematics.

get rid of the most and add a coma and you have it sorted! lol

I don't think knocking anything into a coma is really necessary, a comma on the other hand.....

so one hand is in a coma, and the other one has a comma on it?
