Made in the local art museum this afternoon...

Did you have special permission to use a camera inside the museum? I am under the impression that they don't allow photographs to be taken.

Love creative idea AND the image!

The quality of the image is superb. I love the tonal values throughout the photograph. One thing I noticed was that your head is between the legs of the man in the painting. I think that simplifying the image by removing the bench, you sitting on the floor in the same place, might be interesting. Then again, I would have to see it to tell.

Nice photo. But you'll have to excuse me for having a dirty mind. The head between the legs is hilarious. Sorry, that's probably not what you're going for but that's what I noticed.

Super! I really like this. Looks like (according to the floor) it needs a slight CCW rotation....but the top of the framed picture seems straight. Hmm...

Love this. Really like the b&w, too. Good work.

Edit: LOL - Just read the "head between the legs" comments...hahaha Pretty funny!

It's a really neat photo as I like the sense of intermittent changing perspective that I get...picture within a picture...at times I find myself peering at the painting and at other times, find myself looking at the photograph and the man looking at the painting becomes part of the artwork. I also like the similar tones in the painting and in the museum as well as that both are sitting on benches. The careful cropping, really help to give the appearance of painting within a painting.

They let you photograph - without the flash- samething everywhere-last year when my father came to visit me - I took him to the Hermitage(Russia) - My father wanted his pic taken with the "Benois Madonna" by Da Vinci - asked for permission of course- the huge security gaurd looked down at me and said- "No Flash Please"

Awesome shot John... I keep going back to it...I agree with Zen regarding the subjects lack of feature and expression. The effect is quite dramatic, nicely done!

While this is truly a remarkable shot and I enjoy it a lot, it appears you missed an opportunity to have the subject in the picture several times. Aside from looking at the art, he could also have been standing next to the art, pointing at the art, starting to walk away from the art, and tapping on the shoulder of the original subject looking at the art, all at the same time, of course, just to mention a few possibilities!

Seriously -- very neat picture and thanks for sharing it!

In reply to the poster asking whether special permission is needed to take photos in an art museum, it depends on the museum. The Art Institute of Chicago, like most museums, permits photos as long as no flash is used. On the other hand, the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha prohibits any photography of their art exhibits. I remember one day when I was there, looking over my shoulder and then quickly snapping pictures when I didn't see any security guards. I felt pretty good about putting one over on them until I noticed that each gallery had a security camera hanging down from the ceiling. I'm probably lucky I didn't get thrown out of there!

Why don't museums want you to use flash?
Distraction to others?

The light damages artwork.

Oooh, never knew that was the reason.
Thanks Paul!

A lot of museums also sell photo books that outline some of their exhibits and permanent collection items. They would rather you purchase their book to help support their efforts.
