Cannon EOS 10 D or EOS D Rebel are good choices. Just be sure to get good lenses

Best thing to do is more research. Your choice might be different, depending on subject matter that you enjoy shooting.

Just because a famous person used it doesn't mean it's the one for you. Sometimes it can also get frustrating to jump into a more advance camera.

This is one of the best times to get into digital because of the many choices out there. Good luck on your search.

another great place to look is

//www.dpreview.com/

They have a feature review the EOS 300d at the moment.

They have VERY detailed reviews of many cameras from all price ranges, as well as user forums that are a wealth of information by themselves!

I'm gonna recommend a canon powershot G5 for the adverage user cuz the camera is as good as it gets for the average user that specializes in point and click shots plus it allows you to use it with a lot of manual features.

What do you want(have) to spend?
How much do you use it?
Do you care if it makes movies? Sound notes on pictures?
the size of it?
accessories and such - you like toys or hate to fiddle with things?
How much do you know about DOF, EV, F/Stops, slow sync, PL filter, etc? If you don't know those terms and have no interest in learning, then avoid high end cameras as you'll be paying for things you'll never use.
Do you need / want to take certain types of pictures (pro sports from teh stands, birds, dark theatres) then a dSLR would be the better choice.
Will you be the only one using the camera? (Too complex or expensive and family members will not be able to or allowed to use it)

Define your needs and wants, and then start looking. The Fuji S7000 is a very good pro-sumer type camera, just below the dSLR's in abilities but currently with a rebate from Fuji cam be had for around $500, vs $1000 to $1500 for a dSLR plus lenses.

Remember that people tend to love thier cameras. When I shot Nikon I felt Canon was inferior. Now I prefer Canon. It feels a bit like switching religions.
Don't ask what camera they use, but why they use what they use. You need to find the camera that best packages the features that are important to you. You can't get greatest ease of use with best image quality. You can't get a low price and all the features. Figure out what utility you need and then decide what camera gives that to you.
If, as a rookie you buy the D1s, what are you going to blame the flaws in your shots on? It would be sort of like learning to drive using a Dino Ferrari. The Ferrari looks cool and goes very fast, but it is not the easiest thing to learn on. I think a nice boring midsize is easier as a first car, something without every feature known to man might be easier to learn to shoot on. If you go for the DSLR, count on spending another 2-3 k on lenses & such before your kit is complete.
