The rule of thirds is based on a tic tac toe grid where your main subject is placed on any of the cross points or follows one of the grid lines.

Subjects that are placed like this tend to be more dynamic than those placed in the middle of the picture.

It's something that enthusiastic amateurs initially follows on a semi-religious basis, only to get repeatedly slagged off because subject "isn't centered enough". Very frustrating, but i personally think that it does result in the better photo.
