Having been a part of the first challenge, I feel there is a need for more people to comment and not just troll (I realized the same myself, because the comments arent mandatory, I would just keep rating the pictures and move on).

So heres the big question: Why cant we make comments mandatory?

First I thought we do that only if someone rates a picture <=4.. but then everybody would tend to give at least a 5 to avoid writing one.

There are a few downsides I still see here:

[1] People might just garble instead of commenting -> but perhaps one can find out who did that after voting ends.

[2] People might 'copy/paste' same comment to all pics -> again, one risks their credibility if it becomes known who is doing that.

I feel this could work.

What do you guys think??

OH NO....

quick delete your message and run and hide. You are going to stir up the monsters now.

Just for fun, do a search in the forums - this has been debated countless times already. There is no solution to this problem and no one will ever agree on how to handle it.

To force people to comment when they vote would guarantee that very few would vote. Considering we have challenges with 200 to 500 entries, the typical entry only gets about 200 votes anyway. Cut that in less than half, and a single vote would have a pretty substantial impact.

Encouraging commenting is one thing, forcing it makes no sense

It's mandatory for you to vote your 20% for your vote to count is that good enough?

But that would also guarantee only serious guys vote, no? Are you saying you are ok with 1000 trollers who make voting a roller caster ride, as opposed to 100 serius voters?

Yes that is good already, but that doesnt guarantee comments. Perhaps make 20% commenting mandatory too no?

What do you guys think??

I think if you made comments mandatory, there would be a very serious drop off in the number of votes cast. Not everyone has time to comment on every image for which they cast a vote. Could you imagine trying to get through voting a Free Study with 400+ entries?

edit: What bassbone said.

Thanks for the advice, but that could be one reason why more people dont put comments .. the fear of monsters... ;-)

Add to which, there are images that you love and images that you hate. These are (relatively) easy to comment on. But what about those photos in the 4-5 range that are just blah - the ones that you are indifferent to.

I'd rather get a few comments from people who really had a reaction to my photo, as opposed to a bunch of comments from indifferent people. "I hate this because XXX" is much more helpful to me than 200 comments that basically say, "Nice."

Then again, you only consider them newbies for their first day; after that, they're fair game! ;)

Prash, I don't comment on every photo I vote. Does that mean I'm a troll?
Which would be better;
200 comments of "nice", "don't like it", "oof", "good find", or 10 comments that actually tell you specifically what the voter likes or doesn't and suggestions for improvement?

(btw, you've cast over 600 votes and left less than 30 comments... :) )

I'm confused... You said that you competed in a challenge, but your entry doesn't come up on your profile page.

If it's currently in voting it won't show until after.

How many photos would you vote on if you had to post a comment for every one?

If you make the comments mandatory then how long would it take before people starting asking that comments be original as well?

I try and comment on photos I "rate" as less than average (below 5), but even that can take a long time.

I find it funny that you keep using the word troll. What consists of a troll for you? Please tell. You have received 101 votes so far with 2 challenges under your belt. How many of these votes do you consider troll votes?

Look here and do some reading. You may get a better idea of how to vote and what this whole commenting subject does to people whenever it's brought up. :)

That concept (negative reaction to comments) is so overblown IMO. I'm pretty much a tell it like it is (most of the time) commenter and rarely get PM'd or negative replies in return. I've commented on 40 entries so far in the Abstract challenge, and many of those comments aren't all glowing praises - not all of them have been marked helpful, but I've not rec'd any gripes either. Even if I did, I wouldn't worry about it. :-)

Suits me - I hate serious people...

Instead of forcing people to vote and/or comment, I think everyone should be able to vote and comment on the votes and comments others leave (not for our own entries), quality > quantity. :)
