I have noticed more photos under open challenges that appear black and white except for the subject.

I was just wondering how some photos under the "Basic Editing rules" for challenges are able to get this effect without spot editing, etc.

This is not a rant or a slam at the entries, I really like the effect, just not sure how it's achieved, so I'm hoping someone will share the secret :)

Just a few examples from the purple challenge...

It isn't that big of a secret, you use the HSL sliders:
