My website is freaking out and I can't figure out why.

This link works: //penrodstudios.com (the splash page is hosted by my ISP). But the link into my site (and blog): //www.penrodstudios.com isn't working. Not that my site isn't working, just the link. If you get to my site via //penrodstudios.smugmug.com it works fine. I have checked and rechecked the link both on the ISP and on smugmug. I'm stumped.

THe first one works for me, but clicking on "blog" or "enter website" also crashes (for me, at least). I wish I could offer a solution!

Anyone else with Smugmug accounts so you can check if it isn't a Smugmug problem?

I have a smugmug acct which is working, but I don't have a customized website like Cindi ...

Cindi,

That is a DNS issue on the server. The people who host your site can fix it easily.

Also, if there were recent changes, it may take some time for the Name server's cache to clear. Cache entries usually last a few days.

I just realized my posts probably sound a bit cryptic.

When you enter //penrodstudios.com it works.
But when you enter //www.penrodstudios.com it doesn't work
It is a server configuration issue that is keeping the second one from working.

The name servers (owned be smugmug) need to have a HOST record that maps //www.penrodstudios.com to the ip address of the server hosting your site.

If you contact smugmug and tell them //www.penrodstudios.com doesn't work they will understand everything.

Thanks, Bern. I'm calling the ISP now - hold time expected: FIFTEEN MINUTES! :O

I haven't made any cname changes in about 2 years. For that matter, haven't made ANY changes in a loooooong time. Don't know why its gone freaky now.

The server that your site sits on may have had an IP address change. That would do it...

ISPs, cell phone service companies, and web hosting companies must all the share the same customer service department. I think ATT/Cingular has about 5 people working in customer service to answer the phone.

Enough hijacking, I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread. :)

It is on SM's side. www.penrodstudios.com is configured to serve up the wrong content. //penrodstudios.com works fine. Someone fatfingered the config at smugmug.

>host www.penrodstudios.com
www.penrodstudios.com is an alias for penrodstudios.smugmug.com.
penrodstudios.smugmug.com is an alias for www.smugmug.com.edgesuite.net.
www.smugmug.com.edgesuite.net is an alias for a539.b.akamai.net.
a539.b.akamai.net has address 64.86.183.57
a539.b.akamai.net has address 64.86.183.19

Hmm, the first line seems to suggest that it should be setup correctly. Is your ISP also your registrar for the domain name penrodstudios.com?

Did you see this thread on dgrin?

I'm still reading it but it looks like it might be related.

That's correct.

Looks like it's working again. =)
08/28/2008 10:16:54 AM · #19
you must have gotten someone's attention and had the DNS entries fixed because //www.penrodstudios.comis working fine for me now ...
08/28/2008 10:27:19 AM · #20
Yes! Horray. Smugmug had made a change and well... didn't tell us. But digigrin had the answers.

>host www.penrodstudios.com
www.penrodstudios.com is an alias for domains.smugmug.com.
domains.smugmug.com has address 208.79.45.23

And all is now right in the world. =)

Given that this is a DNS record change, be advised that some of your customers may continue to see the error for the next 24 hours.

Cindi,

Just following up on what SmurfGuy said...

DNS mappings can be cached both on a user's machine and on name servers. It might take a couple of days for all name servers to be updated. But even then customers can still have a problem because they have the old mappings cached locally. Just tell them to clean out all of the browser cache data.

cheers

Thanks guys. I just fubared it again, but fixed it. lol On one puter it stayed messed up, but since it was working fine on the other I knew it was a cache issue. I'll keep that in mind if any clients have problems.

I only realized it was messed up when a client called about it last night.

Thanks for bringing this up. I just saw (on dgrin.com) where we need to change our domain name from www.smugmug.com to domains.smugmug.com ... funny that they sound like we have 30 days to do it but I haven't received any kind of notification of it.
08/28/2008 12:11:23 PM · #25
Yeah, David. That's the change I just made. I didn't hear anything from SM either. I guess they expect us to be reading digigrin every day for our news?
