A lot of the construction is dictated by price and availability of materials. Brick is at a premium in S Florida because it has to be shipped here from far away. Wood is easier to get here. The local craftsmen in any area are comfortable with the local materials as well. There are many cinder block *(cement block) homes here in Florida, but most of them are away from the waterfront. Some of the higher end and mid range homes away from the waterfront where there is no storm surge, have a storm room, with heavy concrete and steel construction.
Wood homes are built on pilings now around the coast, to protect from storm surge, so it would be difficult to build a concrete one on sticks and get it to hold together as it settled.
It costs about the same to rebuild the entire interior of a concrete home as it does to build a wooden one from the ground up, so that has a lot to do with it too

Ok...here is where I'm riding it out.

Zoom out to see actual area. The lake that I'm on is NOT a tidal lake and no rivers feed into it. It is spring fed and will not rise. I stayed in the same spot during Katrina.

Cya !

How's everyone doing? So far it doesn't look too bad since Gustav didn't gain strength up to an upper Cat3 or Cat4.

A-OK in central Mississippi. It doesn't look like Slidell got too high of winds. I'll try to go home when the power comes back. The fun part will be the traffic headed back into town.

Good to hear. We are about to get hit with the heavy rains here in Shreveport with a possibility of up to 12 inches. More to follow from others I'm sure.

I made a video 3 years ago when i left new Orleans, for a speech class project.. someone else uploaded to U-Tube and a friend of mine found it and actually told me it was there. anywy if anyone cares to check it out.. this was the first one I ever made so it's not great, but I have some good pictures from the storm in it.

That is strong stuff. It reminds me of Everglades City Fl after hurricane Donna, and of Homestead after Andrew as well as the aftermath of Charlie. Now we have two more churning in the Atlantic to watch here in S Florida. We didn't get much at all from Gustov, just strong breeze gusts, and a little rain storm.
