I agree with those who feel that shot DNMC. I also agree it is a lovely photo. It bothers me when a DNMC image is rewarded. We have Free Study challenges. I don't like to see the challenges with specific topics turned in to Free Studies.

(edit for typo)

After giving it a lot more thought, I would say the far shore of the lake and horizon is overexposed. And when taken as a part of the composition as a whole, it definitely enhances the image. So I am going to change my mind on this one -- woman's prerogative ;)

How are you seeing the EXIF data?

I use a plug-in for firefox, but anything that can read EXIF will do. Drag the image into Photoshop, for example, and look at the file info.

I did just that , pulled it into PS but where can I get my mouse on a copy of that FF plugin?

I found one.. NM

On a vaguely related note, am I losing it or does the EXIF show that the shot was taken before the challenge was announced? This one started on 8-27 didn't it?

Do note that in my OP I said "current" red ribbon. :) I acutally hadn't even seen the EXIF, but I've seen too many first time entry ribbon winners get DQ'd to think it was a sure thing to stick...

Can easily overexpose a shot and then pull the levels down to keep the histogram from clipping on the right side. I don't have the raw file like the rest of you though, so I can't express an opinion on whether or not it deserved to place as it did, insofar as it did or didn't meet the challenge on a naval-gazing technical basis.

That's actually not a bad point, although I'm not sure that's what was done here. The histogram is steep on the right, but it does have steps down which would be gone if you simply pulled back 255,255,255 pixels to 245,245,245.
