I find the comments interesting on the current red ribbon in overexposure. They range from people declaring it the winner to people saying it DNMC. I have no question it is a beautiful picture, but I'll have to say I was one of those 2 votes of 3 because I do not see this pic as being overexposed. I don't have PS at work, but I'd be curious as to what the histogram looks like.

It would be an interesting photo to get a bit of discussion going on. Shoehorn? or just a not-so-obvious application of overexposure?

Actually, I thought it was *perfectly* exposed myself. You can still even see detail in the background through the mist. I elected not to comment on it though, because why look like a whiny person in the comments when 300 people are giving praise?

DPC spoke in this case, and they said it was a great over-exposure. *shrug*

well, the histogram would certainly point to exposure being to the right, so I guess my exposure is to the... wrong.

Thanks folks, I'll be here all week.

Thanks Erick. I think that's helpful. I felt bad being one of the lone voices of discontent on it, but I stand by my vote. I still think it's a wonderful pic though.

I agree with those who feel that shot DNMC. I also agree it is a lovely photo. It bothers me when a DNMC image is rewarded. We have Free Study challenges. I don't like to see the challenges with specific topics turned in to Free Studies.

(edit for typo)

I'll join the chorus. It's a GREAT shot, but I don't think it's "overexposed" in any portion of it, let alone in the aggregate. I found it curious the voters overwhelmingly seemed to feel this is a ribbon-worthy "ideal" of the concept "overexposure", but in the end it is what it is, as they say.

If I can speculate on why the shot did well in this particular challenge...

Overexposure will lead to areas which are blown out and lack detail. Personally I was looking for such areas in the photos and whether those areas added to the impact of the photo. In the ribbon shot, the lack of detail is present, but not produced by overexposure but rather LONG exposure. Here's another example of the technique in a shot that is far from overexposed (albeit my shot is only 10 seconds and not 87 so there is still some detail in the water):

My sense is this is how the picture snuck under the DNMC radar and wound up being rewarded for its superior composition rather than meeting the challenge.

I gave this shot a 5 because there is a portion that could be said to be overexposed, but it is not truly an overexposed image IMO.

Didn't vote this challenge, but photo in question did not say (would settle for "say" rather than shout) overexposure. What I am really curious about is what the histogram REALLY tells us. Does it tell us anything more than the automatic exposure feature? (Other than how much of a tone is in the picture). In the end is not exposure, plus or minus, in the eye of the beholder?

I'll admit to scoring it a 4 .. for the same reason as Doc, I don't see it as overexposed ...

I thought it was a fantastic photo. I skipped voting, but figured it would do well, mainly because it had a large area of "white", even though not technically overexposed. Composition and feel trumped the challenge guidelines. The title didn't hurt in this case either.

How about them generous voters--all the railing against DNMC trolls is working! ;)

On a vaguely related note, am I losing it or does the EXIF show that the shot was taken before the challenge was announced? This one started on 8-27 didn't it?

vaguely related... :/

if the date is really an issue I'm sure that SC will catch it when doing the validation ... seems like there are quite a few first-time entrants that get zinged for that rule ..

My entry had 18 votes of three or lower. I wonder if some of those thought the background was overexposed but not the subject? I posted a normally exposed version in the details section, along with a much more overexposed version. Of course, people could just as easily have decided they just didn't like the image (I'll let them argue with the eleven who voted 8 or higher).

Can easily overexpose a shot and then pull the levels down to keep the histogram from clipping on the right side. I don't have the raw file like the rest of you though, so I can't express an opinion on whether or not it deserved to place as it did, insofar as it did or didn't meet the challenge on a naval-gazing technical basis.

Speaking of underexposed though, how many more days of views will 4th place miss out on before the date violation dq takes effect I wonder.

I use a plug-in for firefox, but anything that can read EXIF will do. Drag the image into Photoshop, for example, and look at the file info.
