Yesterday Canon had their turn, today it's Nikon's turn in the limelight. The D90 with 720p video capture.

Eye-Fi Wireless Control Menu in the Nikon D90

This is cool. I bought the Eye-Fi back before it was officially released (being one of the beta testers). One source of frustration is not being able to do anything with it at the camera level besides simply put it into the camera. So this is an interesting addition to the camera.

That D90 looks pretty cool..... I thought Canon might come back a bot at Nikon but nothing so far..... The 50D is just an evolution rather then attempting to hit at the D300. Shame, thought they might have had a better whack at Nikon and that competition would be good but nothing in the last batch....

I thought the 50D did a decent job of equalizing things. It doesn't really surpass the D300 (except in the mp wars), but it's also less expensive and enough of a boost over the 40D to keep Canonites in camp.

I agree and that's what bothers me so much.... Canon are pretty clearly in catchup mode and limiting the loss of customers instead of trying to push as they did when the 20D and 5D came out - both of those pushed the feature set a long way. Nikon is doing that now. I know the cycle will swap and that some of the smaller makers push both N/C.

Will see... I am looking at this upgrade cycle to move off the 20D and was hoping for a bit more then an evolution of the 40D. I am still tempted for FF but will have to see IF that upgrade happens.

I wonder, with Nikon introducing HD video.. Could they be testing serious video camera waters?

Nice! Even without the 720p video feature, it would be very, very attractive piece of equipment! Probably the price settles to a quite affordable level after initial sales launch, so that my wife won't kill me... ;)

as long as it is an addition and not have any severe side-effects, then why not, right? :)

I am not fond of the video/live view either, but there is nothing we can change about it. Adding features is the way to sell!

As far as I am concerned, the D200 is nearly the state-of-art for digital camera, and the D300 nearly reaches perfection. It is going to be a while before I decide upgrading for a newer camera! Viva Nikon!

Video quality looks good. Samples here.

I think this will go the same way as live view and will be included in all dslr`s eventually.

Yes, that looks impressive taken from a 'little' camera!

During the last two years, Nikon has been very innovative. If the D3x is announced soon, it is going to be a BIG splash for pro cameras!

I wasn't going for the idea of HD video but woah, that was amazing quality. This will revolutionize the way we see personal videos on My Space and Facebook type sites.

I wonder what the file sizes are like for the video?

"The file size for a typical five minute, 1280 x 720 pixel clip is roughly 600MB."

Yeah, 720p 24fps capture on an APC size chip with access to all your F-mount lenses - kind of like a camera phone.
Think of the photojournalist applications - one cam with quick switching for broadcast quality video bites.

True, video modes are a bit gimmicky... but the fusion of still and video may be the future of digital cameras.

While technically not a dSLR, the video/high-speed capabilities of this camera are much more interesting than the D90's, at least on paper:

- High-def video at 30fps
- High-speed (30, 300, 600, 1200 fps - NOT a typo) at reduced resolutions
- 60 fps still shooting
- In still mode, 5 second "review" lets you choose the exact shot you meant to capture in a fast-paced situation.

YouTube demo.

I can see the concept MUCH more useful than the 'useless' Live view. Some of the videos that I saw are of very good quality.

I doubt that the Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 camera delivers the same optical quality as a dSLR. The more I think about this video concept, the more I like it. Time will tell. I am quite happy Nikon used this concept on one dSLR.
