I know many people back up to a laptop while on vacation, but I don't have a laptop. The hotel does have an Internet Cafe, however. So, is it possible to download photos from the camera (Canon 400d) then upload them to the internet without going through the bundled Canon Software? And without using any software other than what might be found on a standard install of Windows? Has anyone actually done this?

I did read somewhere that if you hook up the camera to a Windows computer that does not have the software, the CF Card will show up as a drive. Then, you can supposedly copy the contents of the drive direct to the internet. Does anyone know anything about this? Has anyone actually done this?

If software is needed, whether the bundled Canon Software or something else, is it possible to put this software on a flash drive, then download from the camera and upload to the internet this way?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!!

Spend 10 bucks on a usb card reader and that's all you'll need. Shoot in jpg and you don't have to worry about needing any software.

I use a Wolverine Portable Hard Drive when I'm on vacation. Picked one up used on fleabay for about $70. Its more for peace of mind and redundancy ... haven't lost a card or had one go bad yet, but know I'm protected if that happens. There's a way to use an Ipod the same way if you have a special adapter; google around and you might find some answers on that.

Uploading lots of images can be very slow, depending on where you are. I wouldn't want to count on internet access with high upload speed being widely available unless I knew where I was going very well and had done research.

Personally, I think the portable hard drive path is better. These will let you copy all the photos on your memory card into a folder on your hard drive, so that's all you need to carry. Don't need to be near a computer - and as long as you recharge it occasionally or carry spare batteries, you don't have to do it near a power point.

Vosonic and Epson both make portable hard drives that have inbuilt card readers. There are other brands too. There are also cheaper ones that connect to your camera instead.

I took a Vosonic reader on my 2.5 week holiday to Singapore and Thailand, it worked really well for me. I only took two 2GB memory cards and that was quite sufficient, even shooting RAW+JPEG.

These are certainly all good ideas. The card reader is the way for me to go, though. I already have an iPod, but an older model that does not do photos. Another expensive piece of technology is not the answer now. I did try the camera with a very generic XP setup and it recognized the card and camera just fine.
