Today I had the awesome opportunity to scan about a dozen photos taken by my brother-in-law's grandfather. He was a pilot in WWII and a photographer. I didn't edit these other than re-size. I'm looking forward to some fun restoration.

Unbelievable... it would be really cool if you could find out where those pictures of the bomb drops were taken.

My boss is German and was making some guesses based on this pic's water line, but hard to tell.

Very cool. The C on the bomber's tail painted on a square shape should mean these are shots of the 96th bomb group. Google turned up a page here which has a list of their missions. Not helpful in identifying the location in these shots, but interesting. They were a hell of a busy bunch.

Yes these are very cool! My grandfather was a pilot of a B-17 in WWII for the 8th Air Force, 305th Bomb Group out of Chelveston, England (The CAN DO group). They had the G inside a triangle on the plane. He was also into photography. He has about 6000 slides of who knows what (some are glass slides)., or if there are any from the War. He passed away in 2004 and my grandmother this February. My aunt has the slides and looking into getting them all digitized.
Have to see what I have around. He wrote a book with letters he wrote before Alzheimer's prevented it, with where they went, what they hit, and all sorts of things, like trying to loop-tee-loop a Mustang . I have all sorts of things from his office, too. Lots of memorabilia, Nazi insignias, models, etc. I am still going through it all.
As my Dad use to say...listen to those stories NOW, cuz you may never here them ever again.
Guess why I try to get to all the airshows and going on hikes to find wrecks and take pics.

A site with lots of connections to the 8th Bomb Group is HERE

I love the pics!!!! You have given me a great idea. I have a pic of the Enola Gay taken in Hawaii after the famous bombing run by my great uncle. I need to scan it in and work on it...

I don't know. I was hoping for a date on the back as I was scanning, but no such luck. I am meeting with me brother-in-law today to go to a Civil War reenactment today for horse shots. I might be able to narrow it down, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

Very!!!

Maybe you can find a site where the vets meet up to chat? Someone might recognise something that would set the ball rolling. Good luck!

Hey, that's a good idea. Apparently, there was reunion of the 96th bomb group just a couple of weeks ago!! I've found the contact person. I'll let you know what I find out...

SWEET!! I haven't contacted the guy in charge of the reunions and the memorial, but when I do, I'll be sending the pics. If anyone wants to do the families of the 96th bomb group a favor by retouching some of these, I'm sure some of you can do better than me.

The only pictures on their web page are the pictures of their memorial.

I'll post the rest of them tomorrow when I have time. There are about 20 in all.

The photo with the two men smoking would be especially nice to see re-touched as it contains my brother-in-laws grandfather. I believe he is the one standing up.

Happy birthday! actually after looking at other B-17 photos, the bottom half of the wing should be a light grey color/ cloud color to hide the plane when looking up into the sky on overcast days if you want that changed it would be more correct, i could change it if you like

redone smokeing with a little tone added in the skin, also bottom of plane was lightened a tad to make it more historicaly* correct, if you have any more ill take a look and see what i can do with them, ill have some free time comming up to do some in depth work on some of them that are possible to color and touchup
