See my post from 8:46 am. $1299. It's tucked in the page 2 of DPReview preview table of features. =)

More likely reaching the limit of how much improvement to expect from a 1 year product lifecycle.

I think it willl drop initially, but when production on the 40d halts, it's going to go back up. The 50d should be down to $1000 by march ( I hope).

Only just now catching up to the pentax with iso3200 but still off with the AF at 9point. My k100d ran iso3200 and 11point AF from 2006. I'm happy for the features on the 50d but in the scheme of things its all kinda dissapointing.

Kinda like stimulating foreplay without the payoff :(

Hope it will be better for the 5d camp than it was for us aps-c guys. Somebody at canon needs a blue pill i think.

it will be interesting to see what the price difference ends up being if tthe 50D drops to $1000 by March ... if it's only a few hundred dollars I can't see many people continuing to buy the 40D ... I had recently been considering upgrading to the 40D, but now I might wait and go for a 50D ...

I thought the same thing about the 30D when the 40D came out. (I could find the thread if I wasn't so lazy. =) But it didn't really come to pass - at least not quickly.

It's also interesting that the pro-sumer models are being pushed down into the price range of the consumer models. Not a lot of room between the $699 XSi and the $799 30D... but I suppose the feature-set justifies the prices.

It's been less than a year since the 40D was released. That takes Canon off of their 18 month upgrade cycle for that line. While the 5D has been as is for 3 years now. It's time for the 5D Mark II! I want to upgrade to a full frame camera but I don't want to buy the 5D when the Mark II should be out in short order. My question, is Canon contemplating killing the 5D in lieu of the 50D?
08/26/2008 05:52:31 PM · #37
It's certainly a possibility but I doubt they'll kill off the 5D. If the 50D were full frame I could see it happening, but it's not.

here's a leak from amazon on 5D upgrade for photokina!

Seems like they jumped the gun a bit.

Cheers

I won't believe any rumors until the announcement is official. I sick of getting excited and let donw. We thought the 5d II was going to be announced months ago and I'm still waiting.... lol. I do like the look of the 50D though

Canon Japan's 50D site has a nice, brochure-formatted page with reading about all the new features and full resolution sample images.

If you look at the historical launches of Canon Cameras, Photokina was/is a sure bet for the launch of a 5D upgrade.

We will see but like I see I'm not holding my breath. What day is photokina?
08/26/2008 08:17:11 PM · #44
Photokina is the end of September - about a month from now.

B&H now has the 50D's listed, with approx arrival times in October:

50D body only, $1399
50D with 28-135, $1599

Hmm - DPReview posted $1299 for the body, while infosyncworld had it at $1400... looks like DPReview was wrong.

The B&H kit is a rough placeholder with no details/features/specs, so I assume it is not final. I wonder if it will even ship with a 28-135, or the new 18-200, though certainly not for that price.

LOL - the color depth is listed at 24-bit and 42-bit... Can I hold them to this claim? =)

Why not? The 40D is already 24-bit and 42-bit (8 bits and 14 bits per RGB channel).

ISO 1600 looks pretty darn clean here.

Oh, that's the 3x marketing value, I guess. I've never seen it reported that way.

[sarcasm]What the heck - bigger is better! Let's convert to CMYK and call it 32-bit and 66-bit.[/sarcasm]

I'll have to pixel-peep that against my XT. I don't take photos (take I care about) above 400. I would hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Looks pretty darn good to me as well. Certainly better than my 30D or 400D at the same ISO.

this certainly is a major upgrade over the 40D ...
i've seen the sample pictures on Canon's web site.. and they look pretty clean at ISO1600..
pushing the ISO to 12,800 implies that canon feels very good about this new sensor..

the 40D reportedly has 0.7 stops MORE noise than the 30D and uses the same sensor technology as 400D..which explains the noise ( more pixel density )

40D was a gimic .. i wasnt impressed

but the 50D is something else.. some field prototype testers claim that the AF system is better than 1D mkIII
