In this first week of competition, the D700 (powered in large part by IreneM) has posted some incredible numbers. The average vote for this camera (as of right now) is 7.010, albeit with only 3 images contributing to this score. I'd be willing to bet few if any other cameras have debuted above 7.

It'll be interesting to see where this camera settles once it has a respectable number of entries.

If I could afford it the average would soon get dragged down!!!

Yeah, give me 25,000 Norwegian kroner and I'll show Nikon D700 what a brown ribbon looks like.

It's because the ppl behind the eyepiece are awesome photographers.

Is someone really trying to suggest that a camera alone is the reason for high scores?

I'm with some of the other posters in this thread. Give *me* a D700, and you'll soon see that average become a little more realistic.

Put it in the hands of 300 people even.

Should I upgrade? Is the noise reduction at 800+ worth it? Is the full frame worth it? Why is the viewfinder coverage below 100%, when it's 100% for the D300 and D3, and does it make a difference in the long run (I love the 100% coverage of the D300, framing is a joy)? Are any other D300 people considering an upgrade?

I'm pretty sure everyone here who has hinted at that has done so facetiously. =)

Depends on the photos you take, full-frame sensors cost you 50% telephoto and gain you 50% wide angle.

Full-frame for the same megapixels will have better ISO response and less noise making low-light shooting easier.

According to MattO the reason is the pop-up flash in the D700. The prism that is at the top of the camera needs to be made smaller to fit below the pop-up flash, so it can only show a percentage of the full scene. For the D300 since it is a cropped sensor it cannot be noticed.

The difference is one you can probably learn to live with, any shots you take will have a little extra image around the edges.

I don't believe I will upgrade from my D300 as I love the effect of cropped sensors on telephoto lenses. However if I had the means I would consider a D700 as well for landscape and studio work.

That's part of it, but there are examples of full frame cameras that do NOT provide 100% finder coverage. The Canon 5D springs immediately to mind. Another, perhaps bigger, issue is one of precision and accuracy during assembly. Yes, I'm aware that cameras are, by their nature, quite precise, but, to get 100% of the image in viewfinder requires taking precision and accuracy to another level.

True point that and I admit that slipped my mind. It is easy to get an electronic viewfinder at 100% but not so much an optical one.

Oh, Louis, one thing I have noticed that bothers me with 100% viewfinders, is since they are optical, not looking 100% straight down the viewfinder can cause the view to shift and actually cause an edge to get cut off when it looked in frame.

LOL, that's funny. I added it to my profile, (I don't have any super special things on mine yet like all the posthumorous, OOBIE, Yapie, and all those other things all the cool kids have on there ;P)

I really do like the high ISO of the camera. Upgrading from a D100 is a HUGE difference in everything basically. At first when I got the D700 I was scared to shoot at higher ISO's. So I left it at 200. Then while in Peru I turned it to auto ISO while in the operating room and shot from 200-3200 iso in there and was blown away at how great everything ended up looking. The one picture I do have that I entered into the challenge was just one, but I do have a whole series of shots from beginning to end of a gall bladder removal that turned out really nice. During that surgery they had all the lights off and basically used a TV to watch what they were doing inside the stomach. The shots of the doctors were great showing their concentration and everything.

That's great about the D700 and its debut scores, but for about $2800 less you could use this camera and have an average of 6.75...

I would never replace my D300 with a D700. I will eventually get a D700 or D3 to add versatility to my setup. And then I can covert my D70 to IR!!!

It will...and would probably love all the new found attention it would get. It would think it was the "special one" cause you made it custom.
