The other day, when I was out shopping for the purple challenge, I thought, most weeks I'm out buying something to shoot.

I got three rubber duckies, which I'll never use again probably - $11.

For the Sugar challenge (which I ended up not entering) I got sugar and gumdrops - $4

For the Recipe Food I spent around $20, but ended up consuming it all.

For Still Life, I bought grapes and bread - $5

Mind you, I'm not complaining, and frankly I'd probably spend a lot more to execute an idea for a challenge.

What do YOU spend on challenges (not soft- or hardware)??

I find myself spending money too. I shot for 7 challenges in a row now.

Doors - $0
Woody - Woody ($10) - might use him again for photography
Evening - $0
Lawn - Mirrors ($20) - will probably never use
Hot - Fresh peppers ($5) - didn't use, ended up burning them all
Recipe (Beverage) - Lemons ($15) - made lemonade
Weathered - $0

It looks like i've spent money on half of them so far. And if you cont gas these days, them all of my $0 are at least $5 in gas.

Just last week I spent $19 for a fishing license, $25 for a fishing rod and reel, and drove 4 hours (maybe $30 in gas) just so I could get access to a place to shoot that I otherwise couldn't (you can only enter the area for fishing or hunting). And I barely enter challenges anymore. And furthermore, I didn't catch any fish :(.

Spent $18 for three woodies, one was a stunt double and does not appear in the picture. The two duckies in the picture we already had, and one of those was acquired geocaching. Spent 5 bucks on beads and wire for the necklaces.

Spent $6.50 on strawberries and bluberries for the recipe challenge. Ate all of them except the handful that I dropped over and over, for 2 hours, in a bowl of milk.

Spent $12 for a propane torch and $0.79 for a piece of rebar for hot.

Still life, Morning II, and Free study 2008-07 were taken at the house, so not even any gas was used.

Oh, and there was the matter of $2,300 for a new Canon 40D and lenses.... Though, amazingly I cannot find the "take me a good picture" icon, in any of the myriad menus or camera custom set-up selections.

I spend most of what I spend on what I get paid to do, take potraits and senior pics........but I did spend 1.99 on the peep that according to someone was not a DUCK no kidding

I don't usually spend on specific challenges but I DO constantly pick up weird and wonderful things that I think may someday make good props. For example I now have a collection of 30+ duckies, a woodie (he was a gift, tho') a large inflatable cow from a dairy display, cardboard 3/4 life-sized standing cutouts of Wayne Gretzky and Paul Tuttle Sr. (not together, of course!), two manequin heads, test tubes and beakers, various costumes and wigs (also for Hallowe'en), etc. etc. ad infinitum.

It helps having a couple good thrift shops nearby, as well as scrounging from work and friends who know my strange hobbies :)

Most I've spent on a challenge was $26 and that was for modelling plaster and a couple of woodies.

I try not to buy stuff if I can get away with something I already have laying around, but if I have to buy extra props, I'll head for the nearest 2 dollar shop.

What's with the saxophones????
08/20/2008 08:33:37 PM · #20
we don't have woodies in northern mn lol ok or at least we don't talk about them

You win!! lol

As usual, the more effort (and money) we put into a challenge, the crappier the score.

Woody $11.00
Bottle of Captain Morgan $16.99

Woody will be used for other challenges... bottle of Morgan will be used to ease the pain of the scores of those other challenges! :(

All and all.. both good purchases! :P

I really can't afford to spend money on challenges, so I try and make do with what ever I have around the house. I also look for chalenges that I know I can do relitivly close to home or around the house.

Oh man, the people at Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshall's must hate me by now. I buy stuff there all the time and then return it when I'm done. Still life, some purple items that didn't get used, a lantern for patterns, the list goes on...
