I decided to comment on 100 ++ photos today and guess what ?!
Despite the honest and constructive suggestions ( what I see) or how should be better IMHO,my mail box got bombarded by angry e-mails from dear members that maybe I need glasses or I'm too harsh!
Well, either the comments should be anonymus or members can choose no one should dare commenting on their photos!
I will keep commenting because is lot of fun ! :-)

I totaly agree, comments should be anonimous during challenge, and pm-ing due to comments during or after the challenge should be considered an abuse. After challenge if you still have doubts, why not discuss it with everyone in the forums? Those of you who pm on every comment you get, all you do is make people not want to comment anymore, and I bet it's also you who wonders, why the drop in the comments numbers? Anways admins should really atleast make comments anonymous during challenge.

You must have liked mine Kosta, I haven't received a comment from you :)
Seriously, I agree, replies should be left until after the challenge.
Voters may decline to comment for just the reasons you have given, and that is a shame, cos we all need help and guidance to become better photographers.

typo edit.

Also they could probably ad a feature for those who doesn't need comments to turn them off and instead of the textbox for voters to apear "user don't need coments" or something like that, so we don't bother commenting those who are so shure theyr work is perfect and unwelcome any constructive comments. By the way I recived a comment from pitsaman, and I agree mine is far from perfect, there is also a part of what he said that I find debatable, or reather I agree with it how other commenters suggested it should be but it wouldn't even cross my mind to pm him or something about it. I found that verry unpolite by myself without anyone telling me.

Thanks for your comment, Kosta. I didn't really get it but i kept it for me (thinking that maybe after voting I will ask)
That's the way should be.

Kosta, you left a comment on mine also. While I find it more of a personal opinion, I never-the-less respect where you are coming from and feel that you are entitled to have your own opinions. Other than that, with your experience and abilities, I would have loved to get a technical comment about the picture.

Pits,

As a recipient of one of your comments, actually many comments in past challenges too, your phrasing and word choice can often come across as, well, snotty. It's one thing to comment on a specific lack in a photo. It is something completely different to do so sarcastically. Perhaps it was that tone to which folks were responding.

Therein lies the answer !!!!

I too received a comment from you Kosta and have no argument with it..you highlighted the problems with my submission very accurately and without malice or sarcasm.Surely that`s all that`s required in comments.
If we introduce anonimity for commenters during and after challenges..in my opinion, it will encourage sarcastic and abusive commenting...and that`s something we can all do without.

they will loose theyr anonymate as soon as the challenge ends so it's only the one who took the picture that will not know who made the comments until the challenge is over. After it's over everyone will see who and what said like we do now.
Edit: It's usualy during the challenge when people are tempted to spam with pm's all commenters hoping they will change theyr mind and give a better score.

I too received a Pitsaman comment - and it seemed to indicate that my subject did not quite fit the challenge for motion blur. All I can say is, perhaps he needs to read again the instructions for said challenge as I panned with my subject and he's the only commenter to feel that it didn't fit.

Yes, this has been debated quite a lot recently, I personally don`t see it making any viable difference to the scoring as you are just as likely to annoy somebody by Pm`ing them during the challenge as gain points. However,I can understand the objection to it..but my concern was related to total anonimity to which Kosta seemed to be referring in the first message.

I had a few comments suggesting that my blur was not due to motion, but to post-processing with software. I also got the impression that my score was lowered for that assumption (which is not correct.) I did pm a few commenters to clarify but I'm thinking in the future, I probably will not do that. For something technical like that, what do you suggest?

I guess the ego in me wants that extra .01 of a point, but I probably am wasting my time, irritating the commenters, and it really just doesn't matter.

Judy, what you highlight is the frustration that most of us feel at not being able to include details of how the image was taken and post processed, with the submission and when you see comments that you know are totally misguided..it is very hard to accept and ignore. However, until the situation changes in that regard there is not a lot you can do but grin and bear it.Some people seem to object to having their mistaken comments corrected during the challenge.

As english is my 3'rd language I have to agree again, with pitsaman, I did not see the sign "Only perfect english speakers are welcome" when I joined.

I envy you being able to speak more than one language
You are making yourself understood very well in this thread and I can`t imagine anybody taking offence at your comments on their work unless they feel it is phrased abusively..which I am sure you are capable of avoiding.

I have attempted to make comments on two challenges and found the task to
be arduous, at best. There are so many entries that it is almost impossible
to get through the task in the allotted voting time. To give complete and
fair commentary on each image is impossible.
I agree that it would be counter-productive to make comments anonymous, that
would encourage irresponsible comments.
My comments have resulted in a blizzard of protestations, some very angry ones!
That does tend to put a damper on one's willingness to comment. An honest
opinion should never be ignored, nor should it be trashed! I appreciate the
opportunity to respond to questions about my comments and I feel it makes me
a more responsible critic. Leave the system alone!

I am really new here, so perhaps I do not yet have a complete understanding of the situation. I have really appreciated the time effort others have provided to comment on my entries - whether I agreed or not. I am learning from every comment. I know my photography is not perfect and probably never will be, but each comment is a reminder to consider something else when framing, when watching light, when focusing, when doing the myriad of things I used to take for granted that I knew how to do. I have only recently taken that leap to share my images with others (outside of friends and family) and that is a giant leap. I have to admit I am in awe of most of you, and your comments mean a great deal to me. So thanks!! And I hope things are left just as they are now.

Seems right to me... anonymity for both pix and comments until after voting. Good idea Pitsa:)
04/03/2004 12:55:38 PM · #24
People tend to disregard that what we are saying is only for the period of voting. After that everyhting will be revealed including identities so I really don't think comments will be anymore irresponsible than they are now.

OK I don't sink the comments should be anonymous, because you and me and everybody ask for comments. So if some body give 2 and make comment , witch looks not good for me I have to scream and yell on this persons because THEY se what THEY SEE and FEEL on my photo . He or She made comments because you ask for this.

Thanks Pitsaman for your comments and score 2 {lol}
