My family and I are traveling to Oregon in August for a two week vacation. We're flying into Portland, then heading to the coast and going south to the border, then coming up the interior to Crater lake, and back to Portland.

It looks like there's just so much there, but what are the can't miss things to see and shoot? Thanks for any help.

Throw a rock. Then shoot where it hits. It's that easy in Oregon... :)

When in Portland, head east along the Columbia river on the Oregon side. Some amazing landscape and waterfalls along the way. You can see some amazing stuff within an hour of the city. It just gets better around every bend.

Do not miss the Silver Falls State Park. Over 10 waterfalls in the state park

Look at Dr. Achoo's portfolio....you'll get a great idea of what to expect. I myself just was up in the Cloumbia River Gorge today.....some amazing waterfalls on both the Oregon side and the Washington side. That is a don't miss for landscape photographers (which I am not) :O(

The Doc is right: If you're driving that route, you won't need any pointers.

My wife & I spent 10 days last summer driving the same route, and we could've stayed forever. There's just too many places to list - but you'll find all kinds of awesome blowholes (Devils Pulpit is cool), sand dunes (Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area), lighthouses, and generally incredible offshore scenery.

An example.
Another example.

Warning#1: Even though it's summer - prepare for some potentially very cool evenings!
Warning#2: Your family will likely wish that you'd left your camera at home... as it will be glued to your face for the entire trip ;O)

Have a blast!

Hey, if they head east along the Columbia River for an hour they will be at my house!

Please, no popper-nazis!

smichener,
The route you have planned should lead you to plenty of photo ops. Definately stop at Crater Lake. You'll love it, especially in the early AM or PM.

I second all the comments about the coast and the Colombia River Gorge. For your return trip through central Oregon, Take US 97 north from Crater Lake and you will find plenty to shoot. Just south of Bend is Newberry Volcanic National Monument. Between Redmond and Madras is Smith Rocks State Park, and the Crooked River Gorge. Take US 26, just north of Madras, to Oregon highway 35 and you will pass along the eastern shoulder of Mt. Hood to the Colombia River. The three sections of the John Day Fossil Beds are also in central Oregon. Like the Dr. said, it's hard to go wrong in Oregon.

When in Portland you're pretty close to seeing Mt. St. Helens in Washington State too. I adored Crater Lake ... man, oh man, that place is magnificent to shoot.
Have fun.
I agree with all below ... Oregon is a photography paradise.
