its really kinda funny how much of a beating my submission for out of place is taking. its seams like some people can't make there FEEBLE minds look beyond the obvious. I personally like to have to think a bit rather then having black and white concepts. I would love to explain further, but I'd probably reveal my photo, so, after the challenge is over, then, I'd like to point fingers:)

don't you think you are being a little FEEBLE yourself!

the people here know a good photo when they see one. if yours is geting a beating, its probably because it sucks. sorry, just being honest.

I put in the comments of my out of place photo that it should be pretty obvious what is out of place. Judging by my comments, I really spoke too soon. Come on guys, take longer than a millisecond to look at the pictures!

If you're going to accuse people of being feebleminded, it's probably best to check your spelling before you do so, lest people take you less seriously. :)

all I am saying is that ALOT of people CAN'T see the forest for the trees. it's like listening to a poem and complaining that it doesn't rhyme, or looking at a van gogh and compaining that it doesn't look real enough. I'm am neither a poet nor anywhere near van gogh, but, I DO appreciate art in many, many forms, I prefer not to pass judgement within the first few seconds of seeing it. I feel that dof, cropping, contrast and so forth are just elements in a good photo, but there must be some concept to go along with it. and btw, my spelling appears correct, my GRAMMER sucks! I figure, if you took offense to my feeble minded comment, then maybe, just maybe........

Well I think this is in order.

Every time I see this style of post it made me want to create this.

ya know it just dawned on me. ok, if there is a photo of something that is completely in its "place" in the challenge for "out of place" then, wouldn't IT be out of place then? wouldn't it? lol

I take no offense at all to your comment. I don't consider myself to be feebleminded. I haven't voted in any of the current challenges, thus avoiding the chance that I missed the opportunity to look beyond the obvious in your photo. And when I do vote, I find the way that I vote to be perfectly acceptable.

(But your spelling is still bad.)

Cheers!

ok, ok, I get it, I can't do anything right, alright, I admit it, forgive me oh great ones, I never meant to be so ignorant. this is exactly my point, you are focusing on the wrong part of the picture. I couldn't ask for a better example.

There's currently over 670 photos to vote for in all the challenges.
Unless it's obvious as soon as a person looks at your pic, they're not going to spend time studying it to look for an "arty" interpretation of the challenge.

Perhaps it should be pointed out that it is better to give due consideration to the shots on which you vote, rather than to vote on as many shots as possible.

I have come to the conclusion that some people think their shots should be judged as if they hung on the walls of a great museum; imagining people would pause, observe with care, reflect and consider, attempting to take in the genius that was theirs to enjoy, if they just pay attention. I think reality of judging here is more similar to someone looking for a postcard in a crowded rack of postcards; there are so many on display that only the ones that really draw your eye get any consideration, of the handful that strike the right cord each of those will be considered, but the rest receive only the most cursory review.
I read an article on sportshooter.com about the photo editors at Sports Illustrated at the Superbowl. They reviewed eleven thousand images at a rate of one each two seconds. They were reviewing the work of great photographers in two seconds. I doubt subtlety was rewarded there either. Once you have a strong reputation as an artist of power and subtlety people will search your work for meaning. Until then, grab people’s attention or you have wasted their two seconds. Not that my work can do this, but it is a more realistic goal than changing the way they see.

ON the Out of Place I spent about 1 hour voting (on all 242 pics) and commenting on 37 of them. I have a broadband connection so things are nearly instant in downloading. That is an average of 15 seconds per picture, and allowing for misc things, I probably spent 8 or 9 seconds looking at each picture. I know I spent a lot more time than that thinking of my entry, gathering the materials, taking the shot(s), and then picking and editing the entry. I have perhaps an hour to an hour and a half into my pic. I know the details, the nuances, the flaws.

I cannot expect anyone to spend that amount of time looking at my pic, trying to understand my state of mind, etc. It just isn't gonna happen. So should I be upset when they don't see what I see? No. If your score matters (or the comments) then you need to shoot pics for the audience that will be looking at them! And if that audience has but 9 seconds, you had better create a pic that gets the message across in 9 seconds. If you choose not to, then perhaps this is not the place for you. Or at least don't be surprised by the results / comments.

And as for the ability of Renoir or VanGogh, I bet in their day the average art buyer/critic spent very little time looking at their work too. Many of the classic artists died poor, never seeing a dime from their artwork. I bet they were plenty upset about it at the time!
