I can respect that. Anyone that takes pictures as great as yours can't be all wrong. :)

I actually agree with Pitsaman on that one. I rated it a 4 because it was over processed and did not hold photographic integrity for me. Also, Eye Magazine is a magazine about movies, not about eyes. That image would never be on its cover.

However, the image is absolutely Stunning (with a capital S) which I why I gave it a 4 rather than a 2. However, I neither felt it fit the challenge nor the integrity of photography. Apperently, I was in a very small minority.

I got a comment on my Free Study picture telling me that it's something that has been shot too many time before. Sort of like people are tired of it. However, it's the only picture in challenge that is like this as apposed to the 15 or so flower shots. I'm not saying anything bad about flower shots becuase they are such great subject matters. But how do you say mine has been over done when it's the only one out 310 pictures that is like it? I don't get it.

.....correction, 35 flower shots. hhhmmmm, that's more than 10%.

HOWEVER, some of those fower shots are absolutely perfect and worthy of a ribbon.

I have the same scenario but was expecting those comments. I did one of the tutorials here to try myself and it was harder than I thought. It was a learning experience and I enjoyed it. Low scores I'm getting now really didn't bother me at all. Next free study challenge, I'll select another tutorial here that I've never done before :)

Sounds like the same genius that told me my shot looked like it should be a photo on Ebay

Just an observer in this, but I thought I'd add a different perspective.

I can understand if you don't agree with some comments, but without taking sides, it sounds like it was his opinion, and that's what comments are about. You are not hearing from a panel of professional and paid judges.

You can look at a critique two ways: an attack on your work or as helpful. For the most part, you should realize people aren't wasting their time to attack your work, so even if worded poorly, or not sugar coated, they are offering you "their advice" or at least explaining why they scored you as they did.

You can make use of that information, or you can ignore it. But either way, you might consider that this person took the time to comment, and appreciate that his/her intentions were probably "good".

And if you can avoid being offended, you can perhaps gain from this person sharing their perspective. You can always decide to respectfully disagree and ignore it.

On the other hand, making fun of hopefully well intentioned critiquers in these forums will not solve any problems, except to make people stop critiquing.

In fact, not from personal bad experiences here, but from what I've read in the forums, I am beginning to wonder if this site doesn't need a "Critical Comments" flag on a submission, to indicate whether you are actually interested in hearing criticism. Many people are not. There's nothing wrong with that of course, and another site uses such a flag and text to remind critiquers what level of interest the photographer has in getting critical (and constructive) comments.

Just my own opinion, of course, offered constructively. :)

Funny! No, not a bird either. But I really wish I had access to some of those birds! I bet it's fun trying to get a good shot of them.

Very well said.

If that other site is worth1000, they do have a great idea in the "don't tell me what you think" flag. Downside is they "strongly" coach folks away from negative feedback so I got some "nice shot" but no where near the critical eye comments I get here. I must admit I'm slowly edging towards less commenting as the investment in time vs. increase in my ability to improve my own photography based on honing my commenting skills isn't paying as well recently.

Don't call names here!If you don't like comments ,don't post photos!
If I want to sell something on E-Bay, I will place the item on the front of garage and snap!,But I would not use the same photo for competition!

Sorry to read that Theresa as I always look forward to your comments..constructive as they are.
Recently, I`ve been doing a little experimenting with my submissions and have relied totally on getting comments.I have also learned quite a bit from the comments received on my current submissions..especially "out of place"..I wouldn`t say I always agree with every criticism but I certainly check it out and take note to improve the points I agree are lacking.
I think what gets most people down is the rather blunt and hurtful way some comments can be delivered.
In the "Out of place" challenge one commenter told me I had totally wasted a brilliant opportunity..the next comment was full of praise for a picture that couldn`t be bettered ??
As always the truth lies somewhere in between and the main point is to sift what useful information the comment may contain and put it to good use in your future work.

When a comment is based on truth dozen't bother me,helps me improve the next time! When is based on someone's dark/broken monitor, then I got annoyed1

Ok, ok....I woke up this morning and logged on, (addicted) :) I was just down-founded how my score when down nearly a point or two, can't remember, halve a sleep. Sorry folks about what I wrote this morning and don't take it personal at all... i was just upset a bit, and hey, it's way to early in the voting to even raise a hair about anything. I'm very proud of what i shoot and or make out of photos. I'm just trying to find my knack here with photography as such and no more....This is a great site for us and have learned a lot thus so far. Quite enjoyable when I can submit a photo overall...I must say that I'm looking for my own style of photographing things...and I think I'm taking to hard and hard on myself. hmmm, now I know better on what to submit and don't submit...it's been educational. Thank you for you comments and best regards to all....BTW, I just jumped back up a point and halve since this morning....now I can breath!! :)

Seems like you've got the mindset to get the best at whatever is written. I do enjoy your photos (as you know)

I didn't vote here but this one would get 2 from me !

I really understand your point, but the rules say that hue and saturation are allowed, Digital Photo and Digital Dark Room goes togeather, digital art is much more than saturate or desaturate colors, is combine different images form a picture or some genoiuses mind to create a different and unique one.

So, is a DIGITAL photo contest, not a photo contest.

Hmmmm, Interesting point here....

I agree with Dustin. My challenge shot isn't all that great - I just love participating, but I am a little disappointed by the comments that criticize unnatural color, etc. I only played with it that way because I thought Free Studey and Advanced Editing indicated a no-holds-barred type of entry.

04/04/2004 12:05:26 PM · #44
Advanced Editing may sound like an opening to no-holds-bared digital art but Photographic Integrity pulls it back down to earth.

Members are reminded to hold photographic integrity in the highest regard when both submitting and voting.

I can't wait for voting to be over to see if Dustin03's entry is too artsy or just not a very good image.
