I am just a lurker on this site.
I enjoy looking at challenge pictures sometimes but rarely vote on them
most of the time I don't even log in but I couldn't keep my nose out of this one.

I like what this kid is saying. I think it needs to be said. I'm not sure if this is what he ment or not but I see an underlying message here that is very true. For all of you who got offended then maybe you need to look at why you take pictures.
correct me if I am wrong Kipp
If your only taking pictures that are of a certin look just because you think that is what dpchallenge likes then you need to stop. If Popularity on a website and a few bit mapped ribbons is why you take pictures then you need really examine yourself.

now to add my thoughts

If all you do is take pictures of yourself or your kids and win or do extremely well in every challenge you participate in, you need to do something different and see if you still do well. If you don't, then you know it's your popularity not the quality of your picutres.

If this kids post bothered you, you need to ask yourself why. If you take it and really think to yourself about the reasons why you do photography and come out the other side with the same mindset you do now, Good for you. At least you know why you photograph. Whats to lose in that?
If you blast his ideas away and say I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing because it makes me feel good or it's taking me to the places I want to go.
Well, I would call that burying your head in the sand. you will never take yourself to any new places or do any new things that way.

For those of you that his original post touched a nerve, this will hit you like a hot iron. Go ahead and yell at me and tell me how wrong I am. like I said I'm just a lurker, I like to look at pictures on here, and read forum post.

For those of you who really stop to look inside yourself, I applaud you. It's going to take you to a better and deeper place in your mind, your art, and your life.

Don't be afraid to try new things, follow new ideas. Old men dream dreams, and young men have visions.

One can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself.

Each year we see the novices arrive,
eager for Accolade and full of scorn
for our Establishment, already torn
between their need for patrons and their pride.

Oh dear, I just quoted myself. Here's a link to the quoted text and four other poems...

Artists make Art because they need to.

Artists make art because they need to eat.

Oh yay, more art martyrs opining art's plummet from its lofty place of romantic idealism at the terrible hand of real life. Woe is me. Spazmo probably said it better than anybody else has so far, although there have been many other great points made as well. There is art that is created for the sake of art, and there is a point where you need some bread.
Another comment on Ed's blog
"Note to newbies: There’s a broken heart for every light on Broadway, and a forgotten artist or dealer for every tack light in Chelsea."
AGAIN- several folks have discussed that this blog discusses the ultimate in chic, hipster art scenes- NY. If you don't think you need to sell out to be there, you don't seem to have any concept of the art business. If you want to keep art art, do it, but don't be surprised that the BUSINESS of art is NOT art in its pure, lofty, and idealistic form.
And why should it be a surprise that when people have less money to throw around, the only artists supported are big names? Because folks with exorbitant incomes keep buying, and they buy largely as AN INVESTMENT. Isn't it ironic that artists that "create for the sake of creating" and "art for art's sake" feel the need to point out the downturn in the market? And speaking of ego stroking and attention getting, this all started where? A BLOG. Oh the humanity! Sorry (not really) for the strong language. These lamentations are trite to say the least. Write your dirges today- art may die tomorrow! Just like they said it might 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 40 years ago.................
