Hi
Just purchased the nikon D700 and cannot get it working with my computer which is running on XP, I have checked the CD rom and it would appear there is no driver for the D700.
Is anyone else having this problem, if they have theirs working could you tell me how you did it please

What do you mean can't get it working? Your computer doesn't recognize new hardware? The RAW files aren't recognized?

Have you tried asking the same question in the Nikon forums on dpreview?

It's not recognizing the camera stating invalid data you search for updates and drivers and there is no D700 on the software provided, does not even down load of Microsoft down loader

Tell you what, send me out the D700, I'll test it out and let you know what the problem is! ;)

Must admit the pictures that i have viewed on the camera seem excellent but I just cant see them on the computer, by the way don't be offended if I don't take you up on your offer.

How long has the D700 been up for sale? Maybe the software companies haven't released support for it yet. I remember having to download updates for my D300.. I understand you have already looked for updates.. I suggest contacting Nikon for more information.

It's a trick to sell more memory cards to store photos on untill they come out with the correct drivers for the D700 =)
07/25/2008 04:11:08 PM · #12
perhaps nikon is going into the card reader business and it's a way of making more money

Use a card reader then move on to the next problem: software can't read raw files. ;oP
07/25/2008 05:41:36 PM · #15
You mean that XP won't read jpg files generated by the D700?
Or do you mean nef files?
07/25/2008 06:50:22 PM · #16
Might check to see if your camera is in Peer 2 Peer or Mass Storage mode. and depending on what you want to be doing (just transferring pics-use a card reader).
Plug it into a Mac instead and you would have no problem. :)

Normally I would agree, but don't forget it took Apple 3 mths before the D300 Raw files could be opened on a mac.

I've not heard you be completely clear with your problem. If you hook the USB to camera cable that came with the D700 from the camera to a USB port, does the computer recognize the camera????
Since you say you can only view the images on the back of the camera I assume this is the problem... but you don't say this. Or have you tried to use a CF reader. Since you made a comment about Nikon going into the CF Reader business I assume that you DONT have a reader.
Have you installed any software that came with the camera on your computer????

Anyway, here's a pointer to a PC program to change the D700 NEF file to a D3 NEF file so it will work with current RAW converters. Just in case you get the files onto your computer.

In any event, at the forum pointed to above I found no indications anyone is having the problem you describe. But...... few seem to have the camera in hand.

B&H seems to have them in stock if anybody has
3K to burn.....

A good friend of mine is already in Beijing preparing for the 2008 Summer Olympics broadcast. He and I both shoot with Nikon D3 cameras.

Yesterday, via email, I mentioned your comments about the software challenges with the Nikon D700 and here is what he wrote back.

"There is a Nikon Support Centre here at the Main Olympic Press Centre. The chaps there have three D3 bodies and about six D700 there for loaners just in case the pro photographers here needed repairs. They said the Adobe ACR is expected to get its D700 update in two weeks, so for the time being, all Adobe products such as CS2/3, LR cannot read or write D700 NEF files (except I think there is a beta ACR out there). But, of course, this is not a problem for NX2.

Here’s an interesting observation, during the Torino Olympics, I saw 95% of the “PROs” are using Canon products, maybe it is early yet, but in the past week, I saw 50% of the Pros are using D3s. I spoke to a couple of them and they said the high ISO is the main factor for them to switch back."

I just thought that these comments might be interesting to you regarding the software challenges. I hope that they help.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi
Many thanks for your comments, I,m not sure if it's a software / driver problem as when I connected my D70s to my computer it shows in the top panel >PC with a moving line indicating transfer / talking to computer.
However when I connect the D700 the PC connection sign does not appear and the normal lcd panels displays ready for taking photographs
What do you think, usb broken on the camera although when you connect it shows on the computer found new hardware D700, but wont go any further..
Thanks
John

What do you mean 'won't go any further'?

Does your camera show as a drive in windows explorer?
07/27/2008 01:45:03 PM · #24
no it does not show as a drive
with the other question it shows found new hardware D700 then the check for updates yes or no tried both and you get the same pop up window invalid data input
07/27/2008 01:50:38 PM · #25
should it still show as a drive in windows if it has no drivers installed for it???
