Would like to introduce myself, my first time in these forums.

I just came to look around but spotted an image that took third place in a challenge that looks extremely like the one I submitted in the Fujimugs Challenge just four weeks before:

This is mine in January at

//www.fujimugs.com/challenge/show_entries.php?challenge=17&entry=1548

' . substr('//www.fujimugs.com/challenge/challenge_0017/394099.jpg', strrpos('//www.fujimugs.com/challenge/challenge_0017/394099.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

And this is the one that was enter for the DPChallenge just four weeks after mine and took third place:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=61686
just four weeks later:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/192/61686.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/192/61686.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Do coincidences like this happen often or am I being naive?

Is there an X on the ground where you are supposed to stand & take pics??? HAHAHA
I can tell they aren't the same shots....it just freaky!
The windows aren't in yet on the building to the left.

You probably both live in the same town. If I lived there I would shoot those telephone boxes too :) You don't get to see telephone boxes stacked like that everyday.

It's a small world on the internet, there are people who do live in the same areas. The phone boxes are a work of art so it would make sense that they be a draw to people, especially photographers. If two people acquired the exact same items from a store then took them home to set up the exact studio setup then I would be freaked. Two photographers in or around the same town taking a picture of the same work of art? That's not really that hard to imagine.

Looks like a famous spot, Im sure there are tons of pics like this out there. In any case, I do see copies of others photos from time to time on this site. They might not always match exactly, but the same idea. Matter of fact I saw an entry in the Out of Place challenge, that is very similar to a shot that I saw in a magazine this weekend.

Of course its a co-incidence. Your post holds an undertone of suggestion that your idea has been stolen - I do hope that is an inadvertent thought (though a more careful reading - '"just" four weeks after mine' - suggests the contrary. Or is that your own sculpture/artwork, and are you suggesting it should not be photographed?

Based soley on the position of the booths in relation to the wall behind them, I would guess that you are a couple inches taller that Redmoon.

In other words, they are definately different photos.

I don't think he was really implying that. We have to remember that language differences are hard to read. You can tell easily that they are different shots.

looks like you both stood in the most obvious place, shot horizontally from eye level, like most people do and ended up with a similar straight on shot. Don't even see much of a coincidence seems the most straightforward way to shoot this particular sculpture.
03/31/2004 10:46:14 AM · #11
They are different photos because I haven't published the original without the B/W background. I was pointing to the surprising similarity.

quote=Looks like a famous spot,

In fact, they're are in a side-road of a small town about 20 miles SW of London, way of the tourist track. There are photographs about of them but not that many and I don't know of any other taken from that spot - but I'm sure they do exist. I'd be very interested if anyone could find anything similar anywhere.

I live there and pass them every day and have never seen anyone photograph them before - so they aren't famous in that way.

So yes it is a surprising coincidence to me that one month after I entered a picture of those boxes and it was published for all to see on the net that someone should enter another so similar.

I don't think it was very gentleman like of you posting that comment on Redmoon's photo with such implications. I wouldn't take too kindly to that if it were mine.
03/31/2004 10:59:43 AM · #13
It's obvious that they are 2 different photos of the same sculpture, taken from 2 slightly different viewpoints.

Your implication, both here and in your comment on the photo page, implying that somehow Redmoon "copied" you by taking the same photo is really unwarranted.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/199/thumb/64394.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/199/thumb/64394.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' Willem's shot in parallel lines

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/200/thumb/65656.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/200/thumb/65656.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' My entry to the magazine challenge

So yes, I think coincidences do happen (Even though I actually got the idea from a magazine)
03/31/2004 11:03:15 AM · #15
I'll state it again with the others, it's obvious these are different photographs. If you are implying he 'stole' your actual image from the web and used it, you are incorrect. There is nothing wrong with taking a picture of the same subject as someone else, or the same type of picture as someone else.

Either way, I would recommend editing your comment from his photo - that is really unfair and not very nice.

03/31/2004 11:03:50 AM · #16
yeah, what a jerk. how dare he take a picture of something that's already been photographed by you. that's why i bring a set of photo encyclopedias and a laptop with internet access with me whenever i go out shooting.

I'll leave any conclusions to you.

No, that isn't a tourist attraction of any kind. It's in a little market town without a single proper hotel. And no, a similar photograph doesn't appear regularly on the internet in competions. If it did then I'm sure that Redmoon (and I) wouldn't have used it.

But a very, very similar picture to his was published on the FujiMugs site just four weeks before - mine. Two pictures so similar within such a short time is a surprising coincidence by any measure.

If anyone can tell me when that picture was last published on the internet then both I and I'm sure, Redmoon would be very, very interested.

I'm gonna start right now and send emails to everyone who has taken a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge, since my visit two summers ago, and complain that they stole my idea. That'll show 'em.

PS, No, nothing I've said suggests that my picture was stolen. Only the coincidence of the timing.
03/31/2004 11:06:47 AM · #20
It's not like it's an original setup either. It's someone else's work of art. That's like saying only one person can photograph big ben or the lincoln statue. Being possessive is not a good attribute to have if you're going to be a photographer.

If thats true, you might want to consider COMPLETLY re-writing your first post, woops too late!

Think you're missing the point here Jimmy. This is hardly Big Ben which is photographed by hundreds every day.

I'll show you hundreds of pics of Big Ben and of the Bridge. You show me another similar picture of the boxes and I'll be genuinely interested. You'll be helping me a lot.

I'll take the unpopular route here & say that I really think you all are over reacting. He's tried to re-explain his position in another thread. It is more than plain that the they are NOT the same pic. The building onthe left is in different stages of construction. Language differences sometimes put bad spins on typed words.
Yes, some of what he posted came across with an accusatory tone. I would suggest that he try to edit the post in the picture comments to change the tone, as I think it sounded the worst when read.

Hey, I'm a mother of 3, I need to be able to look at both sides objectively to settle arguments.

Yep, coincidences happen from time to time around here! This is probably the most amazing coincidence I have seen here -- check out this thread from last summer:

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=32155

I'll also add this shot to Konador's post... this is one I submitted for the "Kitchen Art" challenge:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/76/thumb/14856.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/76/thumb/14856.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Red boxes

Virtual postcard of the red boxes

More red boxes

There are probably plenty more too, that was just a quick and nasty search. There are also newspaper articles about people wanting to get rid of them as they believe they are an eyesore and lots more.
