Hey, I'm a dumbsh!t. Could someone please give me dummy proof instructions on how to fix my latest screwup, please? I was in safemode & wanted to run DrWeb-CureIt to get rid of a virus. I clicked on what I thought was the icon and it actually deleted my sound drivers. The sound card is C-Media AC97 Audio Device. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall it using the hardware wizard, but what I get is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" and the only options are to click Finish (which starts a troubleshooter, and we all know they don't work) or Cancel to exit the wizard. Can anyone help? It's an Acer Aspire PC, running windows XP.

Nowadays most of the drivers for sound cards are on the internet...

So, do a search for C-Media AC97 Audio driver and see what you get. Then just reinstall the driver. That should pretty much do it.

If you need anything else just post it here, but this should really be a simple fix. I just did a search on google and I see that you weren't the first one to go about losing you c-media driver hehe.

You can always try to restore your system by going to:
Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> system restore

That will restore your system to what it was previously; all the programs you had installed, drivers... but will leave all your document intact.

Hope that helps... otherwise you can always google C-Media AC97 Audio driver and install them again.

Thanks for the replies! It took all day to fix, I kept trying to do a system restore but it kept failing. Finally I had a moment of clarity and went back into safe mode and did a system restore there. This finally worked. I got the virus back and had to start that part over. LOL! At least I'm once again virus free & I can hear too! Now to figure out a way to lock hubby out of the computer since he's the one that got me the lovely virus...
