Hi All,

Really dont know much about these things but.........

Is their a benefit to using one for studio work?

I shoot with a 40D - is the built in one any good - do I need a light meter?

If so can anyone recommend one that does not cost the earth

thanks

Tony

If you're using strobes in a studio, then you should have a light meter.

I have the Sekonic L-358. I don't know what "costing the earth" is to you, but the Sekonic is reasonably priced IMO.

sounds reasonable price -are their any alternatives to that - would anyone argue a better / cheaper meter.

Also - sorry to sound dumb ass.... would you meter outisde also? Same meter?

thanks

won't argue better\cheaper.

We have the L-358 and I prefer it.
We also have a Sekonic L-308s. It works great too. I just prefer the size and controls layout on the 358 over th 308s.

I have no idea what the cost differences are.

There's not any reason to use a light meter outside, unless you're shooting with strobes.

A light meter is used primarily for studio situations where strobes are being used. The reason is, there's no way to make your camera fire the strobes and meter while the strobes are on, so you're not able to determine the exposure with just your camera. You can use a meter to fire your strobes and get a reading while they're on. You set up your camera exposure in manual mode using those readings.

In the age of digital film, it's not absolutely necessary to use a meter at all. You can guess at the exposure, take a shot or two, adjust based on the results, repeat. But if you've gone so far as to spend money on strobes, you probably find the cost of a meter money well spent.
