Isn't the point of threads like these to give recognition to photographs that *don't* receive official site recognition in the form of being on the front page?

I realize you choose these before voting is over, but I kind of think that's missing the point, no?

Just putting that out there.

Ohh.. I understand what you are saying. So that means if an image has already been recognised as a winner, it shouldnt be in this thread. If this happens again (my choice coincides with the voter's), I will make sure not to put it in this thread, but PM the winner instead.

Thanks:-)

' De Sousa who originally started the first thread like this mentioned focusing on "different photos" than the ones that win DPC ribbons over time it has evolved to just posting your personal winners. If we stick to just the ones that don't win DPC ribbons then Posthumous himself (i.e. the guy who's name graces this thread title) would be barred from posting here since he has given his ribbons to DPC ribbon winners in the past and posted them here. It's unavoidable when you are giving your awards during voting like I do as well. I think it's silly to avoid posting those that also win a DPC ribbon. Besides, if all your ribbons are going to DPC winners then maybe you should just stop giving ribbons out altogether and should think about why you're such a sheep.

Nobody sez it better...

and when all the posthumous ribbons are also dpc ribbons, I'll know it's time to holster my guns and ride on to the next town...

Soooo... If I am taking this all in correctly... The alternative ribbons were started because the average voter was wrong. (Oh voting safe, voting saturated, voting water drops, or what have you...) So the thread was created in an effort to reward the real talent that was ignored by the mindless masses.

So if, the masses start voting for the real talent, then this is also somehow wrong, and the alternative award givers have become sheep somehow.

Got it... So very DPC, no matter what, it's wrong. ;-)

Yeah but these are the enlightened sheep. Wool covered guardians of good taste. Or maybe they taste good. I forget.

Actually, there are no set rules for this kind of thing: some select during voting, and then their awards will sometimes go to ribbon winners. Others select after voting--I do that, and I also could not deal with the stress of downselecting to only 3 for awards (in a challenge with 400-500 entries, that just doesn't work for me), so I "nominate" as many as I see fit, and award to one (and sometimes two) the "winner" award. I tend to select images that did not already get recognition, but not always.

It really isn't, in my view, any sort of "the voters are wrong and we know better" sort of thing, as the snarky comment suggested: it is simply that there are many kinds of photography, many tastes, many styles. These alternative awards are a way of showing appreciation for those images, encouraging those photographers, and letting them know that their work DID connect with some of us.

I doubt I will ever get a ribbon here, but on those occasions where I get a mention in this thread, it feels REALLY good :-)

Prash, it is your award--do it the way you want to do it, sir ;-)

ETA: Actually, asking you to re-read the post when you didn't understand it the first time probably isn't going to change anything. So let me re-state it in another way. I assume your post was in response to this sentence I posted:

"Besides, if all your ribbons are going to DPC winners then maybe you should just stop giving ribbons out altogether and should think about why you're such a sheep."

Perhaps you mistook that as me saying DPC ribbons are handed out to the wrong photos. Quite the contrary. Every photo that has ever won a DPC ribbon deserved it, plain and simple. It is afterall a popularity contest so there's no disputing the results unless there's evidence of voter fraud.

What I meant by that sentence was if you agree with the DPC results all the time then you're certainly not excerising individual thought and you should ask yourself why that is. Who knows, maybe you're the one person who's likes and dislikes are shared by all people and as such ad agencies constantly call you to participate in focus group person studies?

I'm guessing that you are calling my comment snarky, which it wasn't in any way intended to be. I very much believed this thread's purpose was to get recognition to photographs outside of the winners every week. I have to admit I haven't followed the whole thing, and Prash was simply the first to show a photo from the front page that *I* saw, so I wanted to touch on how I thought the general feelings of the thread were. Now I know that it's not uncommon to pick photos that are also winners. C'est la vie.
