Whatever happened to the Masters Challenges? Did someone decide it was too elitist? I'm not even eligible, so it's not bellyaching on my part. It was just exquisite to contemplate those entries as a group, as well as voting on them.

I think so.
I think the thoughts were those with lots of ribbons would just get more ribbons and thats not fair. So then they ran a challenge for those with no ribbons but people complained that they wanted a chance against the perennial ribboners. Forums were filled with Hullabaloo and madness ensued. I think it may not happen again.

Masters Free Study
Impressionism 1 needed three ribbons to enter
Low tech no ribbons required to enter

oh man, it was really cool to see what the "masters" came up with (quotes, because I happened to be included in that first challenge).

I have been waiting ever since my very first ribbon to participate in one, but it's never happened. :(

Such competition seems to foster some great photos. The closest thing we've had is the DPL. I feel my effort was maximal during that season in order to bring my A-game.

Too many people pissed and moaned cause they were excluded so I never got a chance to compete with the true masters. When I qualified it was way too late...

Fire up dude! I didn't even have a ribbon when the first master challenge was announced but still loved the idea. But I guess some people can't be left out...

I love looking at the *masters* photos ... no ribbons for me, I seem to be stuck in the 5.7 range these days .. but I'd still like to see a challenge like that again!

This has been a long discussion. There have been lots of annoyed DPCers because I stayed in subject too long and complained a lot why the heck we don't have something better... as soon as I say "something better" as you may guessed it, I was bombarded with rest of the people here "Aren't we good enough?"... and my answer to that always "No"

There should be Master challenge and there should be "judges" voted challenge instead of public vote. These two things bring the best of the bests, and unfortunately not all of us on that league...

Now I go back to my corner, and act like I said nothing :P

Aside from the obvious, I liked that those challenges inspired some long lost DPC photographers to enter again.

Hullabaloo from Masters Free Study. Of course now we have all matured so much in four years, I am sure this type of thread wouldn't be exactly the same. :P

Yes, that too. It's not as if we haven't had other challenges where not everyone could enter--my foggy brain recalls that there was one where your comments given had to be above a thousand, or something, in order to enter. I would love to be in the "audience" just to see those who are the best at meeting voters' expectations duke it out. One of the most fun part was trying to guess whose entries they were--and Shannon, yours in Masters Impressionism was my top pick yet I was completely surprised to find out it was yours.

Maybe that's a cool way to do it, with Masters "themes", but it would be hard to pick ones that didn't cater to a particular specialty.
