I have a portrait that I've changed the background to black by burning that specific area all black. Is this legal under the advanced ruleset or would this be considered to be adding something to the photograph that wasn't originally there?

I basically did it in a layer to the whole photo and then masked the portrait back.

Impossible to say without seeing what was removed. If the background was originally blank (or essentially so), then changing the color to black would be OK. If the original background had a scene or prominent features that you completely removed, then it would be DQ'd. When in doubt, submit before and after images as a general ticket for an opinion.
