naahh… just kidding. No way would I give up photography. That is just plain crazy.

Here is my question for those who play a guitar. What are the good songs to start learning with? I learned some kid’s songs and kind of able to play them. I even learned a simple riff or two.

Googling around the net it seems like everyone wants to sell you some magic system so you would become a guitar god in no time. I’m not going for those.

Anyway, any starter songs, websites, tutorials or tips for beginner would be great.

Thanks

Nick

Nick, Are you musically inclined - can strum in rhythm, can hear the chord changes, play another instrument? If so, you can probably do well with going on line and finding some good guitar tabs and chords for songs you like. John Denver, James Taylor, Jim Croce, the Eagles all have pretty simple chord structures and you can sound pretty good with some practice. They may not be the most exciting songs...but they will get you going.

If you are not musically included, I would really recommend getting a teacher and work that way. You will progress faster and will improve much more effectively.

I think others have talked about some of the chords, but the major chords only get you a little way. The minors, and the minor 7s and all make the guitar sing and that is what it is all about. Start learning some chords, build up those fingers and have some fun....

On the finger front, play for about 15 minutes a day for a week. A good way to recover those finger tips is to take some hot tap water and add some salt and soak them for about 10 minutes. They will build up the callous on the tips faster than without - an old string players secret i learned a while ago...

All right. Thanks

I'll start trying some of those once my fingers recover a bit. I had no idea it would so hard on my fingers.

Hey, congrats on the new axe. So what kind of music do you listen to, and what are you wanting to do with the guitar? If you want to just learn some chords for party singalongs (if anyone does that anymore) then lots of videos and books are available. If you really want to learn to play guitar, then as already stated, learn pentatonic major/minor scales and modes also. Some music theory is needed too. Find a good player in your town and take some lessons.

Train your ear also. You may not want to buy the sheet music or tab for every song you like, so start training yourself to mimic your favorite songs. I played for years (blues, jazz, classical, even played pro for 10 years) and learned a lot in those pre-youtube years by copying licks from Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, etc.

Bill Withers - Lean on Me

That song is the fundamental backbone of many many many songs!

The same colors as mine, but mine is a fat strat with a humbucker in the bridge position.

Enjoy it!

Nik, as a friend I will give you the following advice...

Don't give up your day job, rock stars have way more hair than you.

Don't listen to him Nicolai. You've got more hair than Rob Halford of Judas Priest, my all-time favorite rock band.

Exactly. Once I get good at it I'm going to shave them off.
