Sometimes I pass voting on a picture because of the 'content' even if it meets the challenge...and please do not ask what type or why because you wont get an answer.

i am new to this but have been using much the same scoring. my avg score given is around 4.8 or so which is pretty right on, i think. as for comments, my method has been to quickly score all the photos in one sitting (if i can bear it) and then i go back, tweek and only then make comments. don't dispair, those with 0 comments, there may be one around the corner!!

Phew!!!! Well I've gone for it on this challenge. Managed to comment on 50 photos so far - thanks to a very fast internet connection at work!!! (Hope I've not offended anyone). I try to be fair and not say things in a nasty way if it's something I don't like.

Good luck to everyone!!! It seems as if there's as much contoversy surrounding the challenge and what fits it - similar to the parallel lines challenge!

With close to 400 entries in the orange challenge, I wouldn't expect many comments overall, unless the picture is really, really good, or really, really bad.

My Orange started at a 5.3 and is down to a 4.7

3 comments for 132 votes, averaging less than 5 for my magazine cover challenge. FWIW, 2 of the comments are very positive.

For my one ribbon winner, I got 48 comments. People like to comment on good photos.

Your're doing great with 6.1 Terje. I'm around 4.5 this round (my first round).

Lykke til med bildene dine!

I totally agree. I've only rated 26, commented on 16 so far. At this rate I may only get through half before the contest closes. So, if my commenting rate slows down it's because I'm trying to rate all the images in the challenge.

I vote much the same way as chinstrap does. I seldom give out a 10 or a 1. Don't often do 2's or 9's, although I find the 9's are becoming more frequent for me as I'm learning how to better critique the photos. I try very hard to comment as much as possible. My "rule of thumb" for the comments are to try to state nothing as an absolute - such as "You need to ..."

I try to start it out with "I think.." or "In my opinion..." I have in the past hesitated to comment on lower scores, but have started trying to do that more because of the threads I've seen in the forums with folks asking for comments, especially on the lower scores.

Right now, I've only voted on 23% or the orange challenge, but have commented on 15%.

Judy, I was one of the lucky ones-- thanks for your comments.

I find that you can't comment on everything and if the photo has the subject in it or something close then you should start by rating it a 5. 5 is about 50 percent which is a pass for having the subject matter in it and as the pictures get better(based on opinion) the score should go higher. Aply all other rules to the picture i.e. the rule of thirds, and the score should increase. I believe that even if the photo is bad but has the subject matter in it then it should maintain a 5. A really bad photo that doesn't have the subject matter in it should be rated lower. If anybody else can offer a better way to vote then please give your voting technique. This way of voting has only been adopted by me in the past 3 challenges.

Your average vote cast is just over 4, do the majority of the images not meet the challenge in your view?

again this was only adopted by me during the past 3 challenges. I wished I had of thought of this sooner. But by using this style/way of voting you should get a very close idea of what your average will be by the time the scoreing is done with a little more accuracy. Think of scoring/grading pictures like a photography class. If you have the subject then you should at least pass. The better the picture the better the grade.

That is because you have a DSLR Jon, it's the camera that make the photo you know ;)

Well with the amount of entries in current open challenge its really hard to comment on all. But i'm doing my best; i'm prioritizing on the pictures that, IMHO, need improvement(s). The really good pictures always get praised after the challenge is over, the ones on the bottom of the scale just go unnoticed. So i think its fair to comment on the ones in your opinion need them more rather than praise the really good ones. This is, afterall, the place where you can learn to improve on your photography. I've commented on about 30% already... how about you guys?

I agree, I try not to say you need to this or that but rather an opinion of what I think about the photo. I'd prefer to receive comments like that rather than a list of what technical improvements I should have done.

I think focus is too much on the technical aspect of it. The "feeling" is more important to me, what does the picture actually tell you?

Also, the 640x640x150KB limit is way too small I think. Should be 800x800x400KB

PS: Don't look at my pictures as a bias, I haven't been able to capture a "feeling yet". :-)

The focus is a big part of it actually. You can't appreciate a picture that wasn't well composed.

Well IMHO, 150K is plenty of space for a reasonable web-sized presentation. Allowing 400K per picture would make it much worse for those still on dial-up and slower for everyone else as well. The direct-from-camera photos from my old 2MP (1600x1200) camera used to average less than 400K! And they could be compressed even further (without any noticeable lack of quality) once on the PC. Computers have more advanced JPEG compression code that what is possible on an 8-bit microcontroller in the camera.

Even 150KB is being generous; you can generate great-looking 640px images in much less space than that.
