something's wrong.

i started out trying to comment on at least 15% of the photos. and tried to give honest and helpful feedback. but i get so little in the way of comments that it just inspired me to be just as cold. i don't care about scores. the first thing i look for when checking the status of my current entry is the comments. i think people only comment on the really good ones and the really poor ones. no one says much about the one that could truly use it - the ones in the middle (like all mine!).

the comments were the only reason i decided to become a paid member. i figured they would provide more influential and instructional feedback. but all i get is the regular comments - "this is nice" or "where is the interest." oh well, i guess i should be in the rant forum - sorry!

My guess is that with almost 400 images to vote on, people are going to make sure they get through voting on all of the images before they start doing a lot of commenting. That's what I did, anyway. I've spent most of the day voting and have managed to now leave 33 comments and it's time to take a break and come back later with a fresh perspective!

sorry - correction. i do get more than just "this is nice" or "where is the interest," but the comment will tell me what is wrong, not how to fix it.

but oh well. why should i complain at all if i am pleased with my picture. that's the only reason i take pictures. i get to share them here and see how many people have the same opinion or different opinions. that's the beauty of this diverse crowd!! :)

I agree. I look for the comments as well as if not more than the score. The score just tells you how you rate amongst all the others, it doesn't tell you how to improve or what to avoid. Being new as well, I look forward to those who have the time to share their know-how with me. Maybe then I can move above my current range.

There must be a bit of comment lethargy around at the moment.I didn`t enter the Orange challenge but my entry in the Magazine challenge is sitting with 3 comments for 138 votes...never experienced anything like this with any previous submission regardless of how good or bad it was.

My orange is 93 votes and 1 comment, I just think people are voting then they will go back and leave comments later, thats what I do. Its been a busy week or so.

So many votes, so many comments, so little time, must sleep now...

;-]

I believe that most people will vote and go back to make comments and adjust scores as needed. I usually get most comments near the end of the week as that is the same time that I usually give them.

Remember that people have lives: school, work, kids, the penguin games and many other responsibilies :P

It's weird that the usual trend is totally bucked - so far, I have 84 votes hovering around the fairly (for me) respectable 4.9 score, and I have one solitary comment comprising one solitary word. And that is a fairly middle of the road sitting on the fence opinion-free comment at that.

Now i for one adore the colour orange (it's the best there is, used to have a volkwagen type III estate in a lovely dark orange), but one wonders if people are generally non-commital because they don't like it, and this challenge doesn't do much inspirin of enthusiasm?

I'm at 132 votes & 8 comments. Unfortunately they're all giving the same reason...which happens to be the very reason I went with the shot I submitted :(
(Mag cover pics tell the main story of that issue & they can't tell that from the pic & mag title)

Contrarily, my Parallel image had 2x the votes & only 5 comments. 3 were compliments (thanks :) and 1 had something constructive. Whether I agreed or not doesn't matter, they took the time to tell me. 1 just didn't find tiles pleasing....lol

I liked an idea posted in a diff thread about being able to see the # of comments already made to an image. It would allow us to make an effort to spend out time commenting to images that didn't already have comments.
Since Parallel was my first challenge, I just kinda took it all in & saw what was going on. As I get into commenting more, I'm going to try to make "constructive" comments to images that fall into that average catagory since glaringly good or bad gets covered so well ;)

How many have you commented on?
There are just shy of 400 entries and it's just now Wednesday.
Go comment-------it will encourage others to do the same.:)

i think i will go comment too :) just to help out
03/24/2004 06:16:29 PM · #15
so far in orange..86 votes, 2 comments. and they came 40 some votes ago. I am scroring a whopping 3.58. In my experience, high or low scoring pics gets more comments, average ones get none. so either this is the average score this challenge or no one has any idea what i can do to improve my picture.
Or perhaps there is a psychological side effect of looking at so much orange that one is left speechless!

I would like to comment, but I am not good at photography yet,and I do not leave comments like"i don't like it" or " It does not fit this challenge". Those are not comments people are looking for.

I absolutely agree and hang my head in shame for being part of the problem lately - then complaining about it.

I just took heeve to my own advice. I just made sure to comment mostly on the entries I scored in the 'mid-range.' I will be sure and comment more during the rest of the week.

Lesya: try telling them why -or- what you do -or- don't like.

Sometimes when I don't have much time I just comment on the ones I really like.

When I have more time I work down from the top and comment through to entries that I think are OK but can improve a whole lot.

I very seldom comment on images that I really do think are utterly appalling. I don't think I have the words to explain why I think the image is that bad to a photographer who thinks the image is worth entering, especially given that people will just look at my work and say, hey who are YOU to tell me that?

I also don't relish the backtalk one gets when giving comments of that nature, even when phrased as politely as one can.

So...

Shrug...

I think some beginers (like me LOL) need a little help...like to know what could have been better or what to fix :)
03/24/2004 06:29:22 PM · #22
Commenting about others images helps to improve your own photography by putting into words WHAT you like about an image or what doesn't work about an image, not just that you like it or hate it.

You don't need to say how to fix something.

It's always good to read comments by other people. Go to Photos>Browse and find a photo and read what comments were given to them so you kind of get an idea what people would say. Of course what ever you put in the comments is totally up to you.

Say you make some comments on "Orange" it very helpful to see what others have said about the same photo that you have commented on. It may not be the same as the other comments but this may help the photographer because it's a different view point.

Have fun and enjoy the site.
