I moving into the wedding side of photography and at this present time completed 1 wedding event this was using a nikon dx2s with a sigma 18-200 lense, the equipment was loaned from work and as I have left that job, i need to purchase my own lenses

What is anyones opinion on the 2 lenses below for weddings I currently have a 50mm 1.8 lense

1:Nikon 18-70mmf3.5/4.5G AFS IF-ED DX
2:Nikon 70-300mmf4.5-5.6G IF-ED AFS VR

I would be very grateful for anyones view on this matter thanks John

Stay away from both - neither are very good lenses for your purposes. For weddings, you need faster glass (an f2.8 or something like it). I would invest in either the f2.8 70-200 or something like the f2.8 17-55 - depending on the types of shots you plan on getting. The nikon version is the best but both the Tamron and Sigma equivilent f2.8 lenses are far superior to the two you are asking about.

Thanks for your advice due you recommend these, also what about the gap between 50 & 70mm thanks again

Sigma 70-200mmf2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II
Sigma 18-50mmf2.8 EX DC Macro - Now available in HSM Nikon Fit only

The 20 mm gap is really not very significant in the larger scope of things and nothing that a bit of crop or a minor movement on your part can't fix.

Those sound like good choices to me, even though I haven't used these specific ones myself.

Third party glass can be really amazing and I have heard good things about both the Tamron and Sigma lenses, but you have to remember that you are using a professional camera that you paid a lot of money for. If you are going to use (sorry to say it) non-professional glass on a camera that is VERY harsh on lenses, you would be better served to sell your D2xs, buy a D200 and grip, and spend that money on the Nikkor versions. I've seen D200's on FM for 800 with grip. You loose the professional qualities about the D2xs, but you will gain a lot more from Nikkor quality build and glass. Just a thought...

On the topic of third party lenses though, I would highly suggest checking out Tokina. I've read so many raving reviews of their lenses, and the 12-24 (which I have) is absolutely amazing. I've heard their 17-50 (not sure if that's the actual range or not, but their lens in that range) is fantastic. Their build quality is the best among 3rd party lenses as well. What you probably need to do it go to a camera store and play around with them for a while. Good luck!

Hi
Thanks for that, unfortunately when I left my last job I lost the d2xs, so with the new lenses I'm about to buy, I will be buying the D300..
