I'll buy a new zoom lens, but I still can't decide which to by?
the Canon 70-200 has the name ,the quality and I can add a teleconverter when I need it . Sigma 50-500 has the zoooom!
Thanks again and forward

The 70-200mm has the fast aperture allowing for better shooting in lower light. Its a whole lot faster. It also has a heck of a lot better image quality. It really depends on what you are looking for. What are you gonna be using it for.

What happen to the 100-400 mm you were looking at?
From what I have, Canon or Nikon, the 70-200 2.8 is about as good as it gets in terms of image quality and build for a long to mid-range zoom, if you can afford the IS it will help even more.
It comes down to what you want to shoot, if you are in the wilderness shooting birds, maybe its a better fit to get the Sigma for the reach.
My two cents

I love you man ;P
When I tried that lens, I was little shocked ! it's really heavy, I can't take it with me all the time. And it's a little bit expensive to me too !
I have 1000$ so I'm struggling between the sigma 50-500 and the canon 70-200 (2.8 or 4 IS)

thanks ryand :)

That Sigma is considerably larger and heavier than the 100-400 you didn't like. If you're looking for top image quality with portraits or low light telephoto, get the 70-200 f/2.8. If you're only going to use it in daylight, get the f/4 version. If you want more reach for birds or animals on a budget, the 70-300 IS is your lens.

I bought a Bigma 50-500 mainly for wildlife, but will probably be getting a 70-200mm soon because I'm slowly getting into portraits.

I've used the Bigma recently for parades and it has really good reach to shot in between people.

It's compatible with ANY Canon DSLR (although it's also heavier than the 100-400 you didn't like).

Works great on my 350D.

400D loves the 70-200 2.8.

But this is not a comperable lens to the Sigma 50-500, anymore than it is comperable the Canon 1.2 85mm.

Any trade off from a zoom to a prime is a degradation of quality for flexibility. Bigger zoom means less sharpness.

In an attempt to waste more time with computer based photography I was messing around in a database looking at where my good shots are shot in the zoom length with various lenses, and with the Bigma they are either in the 50-150 range, or in the 350-500 range. This is the weakest part of the lens' optics, but it seems that these are the lengths that stuff happens when I am walking around with this thing on my camera. Having the attention span of a goldfish I tend to see something way over there, then see something quite close. If I was going to really focus on one thing, I'd swap out to a prime, but the big zoom range lets me grab the shot, and keep walking.

Ah...ya...it doesn't work with the 400D. You should send it over to me.

There's no reason it shouldn't work with your 400D. It's a regular EF mount.

It's the EF-S mounts that won't work on full frame cameras (which the 400D isn't neither is the 70-200 an EF-S mount).

Of course, FD mounts won't work with your 400D, but they're only seen on ebay.

Ok then I'm so lost here..
I'll explain what happened exactly yesterday
I ordered this lens Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS
then they called me to verify my Visa payment. When the guy know that I have a 400D he told me that it's not the right lens for this camera. He said " you will lose some focal length." He continued " if you want a lens for your camera you have to get the Sigma 70-200 2.8, or Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS" !!

That will work just fine on your 400D, do not worry at all.

Did you happen to look at the reseller rating on that store? I'm pretty sure I know why they said that lens isnt compatible with your camera. Because they are trying to scam you. I'd look for a reputable retailer and try again.

Run away! Those links you posted point to the same lens model, but with very different prices (and higher than reputable dealers). I suspect the cheaper one is actually the non-stabilized model, though either would work fine on your camera. You're dealing with a salesman who is either clueless or dishonest.

Wow, those are some prices. I just bought a Sigma 24-60 f2.8 for $269 from another store...price on this one is $899! Make sure you shop around!
