Morning folks

Tho I would throw this out there. Would any of you folks be interested in a dpc convention here in Vegas. Nothing fancy a weekend thing say thursday, friday, sat and every one departs on sunday. Would be nice for everyone to meet each other & then have one annually but in a different state each year. I have attended macna & Imac (aquarium) conferences for 20 years and they pretty cool. Just throwing it out there.

Well, I'm in the Washington, DC area and can't really make a trip to Vegas but it sounds fun.

I think if you are going to do a convention, it should be done at a location that offers tremendous photographic opportunities.

That being said please do it the first two weeks for July and I will be there. I leave Korea on July first, and fly to Greenland on the 17th. Washington DC sounds like a great place for this.... (hint, hint, hint).

Low Air fares to Vegas seem to come up a lot on the air travel search sites, so the location seems like a sensible one. Before setting a date for the event, it would be logical to look for off season time slots when travel and motel expenses would be lowest.
I wouldn't be able to plan to do that sort of event. My family and friends keep me going all over with about all the travel that I can handle financially.

Too much.

Vegas is nice if you want the nightlife, but is that the best we can do photgraphy wise? What is the purpose of the convention to get together and share our passion through taking photos or to sit in lounges and get drunk. If we go without our spousal units then Vegas does offer the lush opportunities of lavish lap dances, but I would prefer for my spousal unit to meet and get to know the other people that she has to compete with for my attention. And if she is there then my lush lap dances won't happen. So lets do it somewhere that we can all get to know each other, share the trade secrets, take some photos, and go home better people.

Before anyone says anything, I lived in Vegas for 4 years (To the HORSE) and love it, know it has photogenic locations, but I think other locations offer more.

IMO there are fantastic photographic opportunities in the Las Vegas general locale. I'd love to do this.

From one of the Vegas sites:

"Cheapest times to go? First, weekdays are generally going to be about half the price of weekends. If you can talk your boss into letting you off in the middle of the week, do it. Second, there are two ideal times to go. The first is the two weeks before Christmas. Usually, rates are a little high until mid-December because the National Finals Rodeo is in town, then it is wide open until the 25th. Before Christmas, you can often get some of the nicer hotels in town, like Bally's, for less than half its usual rates. The other great time to go is in the middle of summer, when it's about 326 degrees in Las Vegas. Actually, it will only get up to about 110, but not much more than that. And, you'll be inside betting the baby's shoes anyway."

lol good coincidence, I haven't been there since 1978. We were planning on visiting Vegas later this year either just before or just after the kids are back in school...

Vegas sounds cool, but I probably would not be able to make it. I could however make it if it was in Washington D.C. :-)

But I would certainly try for Vegas!

This has come up at least once a year, and there is never "critical mass" able to attend any one location, and the logistics (and money) for something like this is huge if it's not to be just a big hang-out party ...

However, does anyone know what's the largest pracical tele-conference we could put together? A big online meeting running continuously for 24-48 hours might be more practical ... people could come and go without leaving home ...

Bhuseman,

There is alot more to do then get drunk. Just a 25 minute drive from the strip there are 2 places to shoot. Red Rock Canyon is one which has a 13 mile loop with over 500 miles of trails excellent landscape opps, wildflowers galore. Mt. Lions, bob cats, 2 speices of mule deer, big horn sheep just to name a few. A mile before that is calico basin Red Spring, 213 speices of birds call it home. There are ringtails, howls and more humming birds then you care to know. Also wild horses, mules and the like. Then 30 minutes from the strip there is a bird sanc with has 300 speices of birds coming thro & yet another place called corn creek that has more wildlife the you ca shake a stick at. Thats just to name a few. :).

Wetland,
Accually the best time to come would be mid March - mid May. Nice and cool plenty to shoot (wildflowers & Wildlife). As far as hotels my wife is a sup in one so she could get us great rates.

Something like this should be planned a year in advance :)

TCGuru,

Just seeing if there was any interest, it would not be done for a year or so.

Well there seems to be some interest so I am going to begin checking things out & form a plan of attack. I will keep you all updated & see what happens.

Thanks for the reminder of these great places. You obviously didn't see the part where I said that I lived there for four years. I am well aware of what Vegas has to offer outside of the strip. My point was that going to Vegas for something like this would not offer much time to go shoot photos becuase most people would be tied to the adult playground aspect of the city and not the outskirts. Also you are quoting places 30 miles away from where most would stay. That is a 60 mile round trip. Meaning you have to have a rental car while you are there and pay a hefty 4 dollars a gallon in gasd. By focusing on an area that is in the middle of somepklace photogenic and easily accesible by walking you are saving those additional costs. Plus you would reduce your carbon footprint in an already smoggy city.

I agree Vegas has some wonderful outlying areas but I am also inclined to believe many of us can't make it there for one reason or another. For me, I try to go once a year and I just really started shooting on my last trip so nothing spectacular from me. However, financially for many of us Vegas would be a hard trip to make. Consider the people outside this country, how expensive would that trip be with plane tickets, passports, hotel stays, etc..... I am in agreement with GeneralE on the one, small group GTG work but to do it large scale we would need to have a online teleconference.

Ah Vegas!!!

ah Vegas

I'm actually going to Vegas for my honeymoon in Oct. and its not a cheep trip
plan tickets from Newfoundland Canada $800.00 a piece hotel Tropicana 1000.00 for 7 days (the weekend is almost $200.00 a day)
it would be great to have a convention in Vegas however with prices like this I'm not sure how many people will actually attend.
