so basically, when i turn it on it repeatedly vibrates on and off, and on closer inspection a slight grinding sound can be heard within the main body, this happens for about 20-30 seconds before it stops and then charges up, the flash then will fire, except none of the top 4 buttons on the back of the unit will work.
i'm not sure about how it happened as my friend borrowed it and it came back broken, sounds dodgy i know, but apparently this is what it was like when he first turned it on
im not really sure what to do about this problem, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

| Sounds like the flash head motor could be going bad but that doesn't explain the four buttons that are not working. I would say that you should see if a local brick and mortar store does repairs on camera equipment and see what they would charge to take a look and see what the problem might be. |

yeah, i'll look into that
might it also be a good idea to send it off to one of canons authorised repair places they have listed on their website
also how much do you think a repair job will cost?

| I wouldn't have the slightest idea but you could call Canon and they might be able to give you a ball park figure. Before getting it fixed I think a new one runs around $240 so depending on what the repair would cost you have to start to weigh the option of fixing an old one compared to spending a bit more and getting a new one. |
