SIGMA 2.8 70-210mm APO for Canon EF.

I found this lens for sale for $375.

What do you think of this lens? Is it a good lens for the price? or is it less than tack sharp?

Don't know about optical quality, but you might want to verify that it will work with your particular body. Older Sigma lenses often require re-chipping, and past a certain age, Sigma discontinues support for that.

What is "re-chipping"?

In the ad, part of the promotion is as follows..."The lens got overhauled, which means calibrated and mechanically renewed about five years ago at Canon's center in Germany for $230, so everything is in perfect working condition!"

Replacing the chip that lets the lens talk to the body. Sigma is too damn cheap to get a license for the Canon mount. They reverse engineer it, so every time that Canon makes minor changes to communications protocol, Sigma needs to re-chip older lenses. It's a good bet Canon does some of this on purpose.

If it's Sigma, why would it go to the Canon service center?

Edit for typo

This lens has a "great deal", writen in it! But you need to consider the usage of it. SIGMA brand is a second line of "copied" products developed by disasembling original ones. It's optical quality is good, some lens are stunning tack sharp, better than cannon ones. Eletronics and overal build quality are the trouble here. Suport is very unacessible, and tech services evenly found.

But... If you will not shot very often with it or do not expose it to harsh enviroment. Not rely your life (as a professional) to this lens, then it's a good lens! A really great deal!
