Can you open a RAW in GIMP then convert to JPG when done. Sorry for not doing my own research. The thing is I have never shot in raw and I do not even know if it really makes any difference.

Any advice?

Thanks, Jay

I see no mention of it in the FAQ for the Gimp, so I am pretty sure it does not import RAW. I did however, find a plugin for Gimp that adds that feature. You'll have to read the details and see if it will work with your cameras format. //ufraw.sourceforge.net/

You'll get my bill shortly. I charge a research fee of 10's for the next 5 challenges or 50 "nice shot" comments.

I don't remember for sure.... its been awhile since I had that program. I don't think you can. However you camera software should be able to convert it for you.

And yes RAW makes a difference Think of it as windows media lossless compared to mp3 files. The adverage looker might not notice but an artist can tell.

edit for typos

Pc or Mac? I have a mac and yes, you can open raw files in GIMP. Even the Raw files for the D300, which was a challenge for me in Aperture until the new version was released.

Gladly paid. Sorry about that, it is one of my pet peeves too. I just knew someone would already know and it would be so much faster to ask.

Great, now I have to learn all about them. Problem is now I will feel like this is the new "only way" I will let myself do it. I am already convinced I can no longer use my on camera flash...drat. I love/hate learning how much better I can be if I only do everything differently... LOL :)
