So my husband gets me to sign up on twitter. I asked him what it was and he just told me to sign up because it's fun. Then he added the twhirl application to my computer and I get tweets on my cell phone. Does anyone besides me find this whole thing bizarre? I'm fine with using it to keep in contact with my husband because he is out of town half the time running his stores. My question is, who are these other people and why do I need to know every little thing they do? Stranger still, why do they want to know what I'm doing? Even though I think it's a waste of time, I am sitting here, as I type this, waiting for the next tweet to show up. Am I the only one confused by this? Maybe I'm just not geeky enough.

Sounds like a My Space or Facebook type of application made for cell phones. I don't understand this My Space type of thinking. Letting everyone know what you do, hate, love , read, watch, listen, etc to me is a waste of time. I don't mind sharing interests with people but one prerequisite, for me anyways, is to know the person well enough to trust them with my personal private details. Giving them out to potentially millions of people on the net seems silly to me. I don't see why so many people do it. jmo

What do these people talk about when they meet in real life? Reality TV?

To me I would say that he is bored and wants to constantly talk to you or know what you are doing every time he looks at his phone. It kinda looks fun but I'm sure it won't stay that way long. If you guys get in the habit of always knowing what the other one is doing and for whatever odd reason you or he doesn't post up what they are doing, I can see someone getting upset or start thinking thoughts that shouldn't be thought. If you guys have text messaging just use that. But don't go all out.

My husband twitters with a group of people that is kind of a blog "ring" he is in.

Their twitters aren't "continuous" or anything, or even anything like a chat. Just a "in this moment in time" kinda thing.

Kinda weird that you posted this; I was going to ask if anyone on here "twittered" as he has been trying to get me to sign up. It's actually rather amusing if you know the people.

Also, from what I understand, it isn't a "post this and millions can see it" thing. Only those that are your contacts read it. . ..

I have just started hearing people talk about "twittering" and now I know (kind of) what it means. Sounds bizarre, but it's piqued my interest for sure!

After googling this I understand its use. Never heard of twitters or twitter.com before today. Sounds interesting if it's kept among friends and family.

It is fun. I don't mind when I know that only the people I want following me are reading my tweets. I figured out how to lock out strangers now. I would have more fun if I was in a group maybe. My husband is a total tech geek. He is following Leo Laporte and others like that. I have facebook and myspace accounts as well. I prefer facebook. But I have it set so that only my friends and family can see my info. Twitter is a lot like text messaging but more like journaling I guess. Anybody here tried it yet?

I think he is totally bored! He misses me and the kids alot when he's gone. I think this makes him feel like we aren't so far away. Neither of us gets upset if the other hasn't posted anything. I prefer texting anyday, but it is a lot easier to send a message from a keyboard rather than my cell phone. If it's just between us, then definitely a text message. I see your point though. Will just keep it fun and enjoy it.

I just joined twitter, and so far I'm just following a few tech and photo "celebs". I didn't get it at first, but right now, I'm mad cuz there just isn't enough tweeting on my phone!

If anyone wants another follower / followee (is that a word?) just search for "bauerfan71".

Yep, that's the key: knowing how to use the settings. I believe the default is to let anyone see your posts (called tweets). For everyone else's reference: go into the account tab of the settings page and check the box that says "Protect my updates."

On the other hand, most (if not all) of the tweets are pretty mundane... for example, I'm pretty ok if strangers want to read my posts about cutting the grass and eating tiramisu... you'd have to pretty much have no life to follow that kind of stuff. :-)
