I've been using the RadioPoppers ever since they came out and they work quite well, indoors, outdoors, around corners, far away. :-)

At some point I want to get rid of the 420 and upgrade it to the 430 ans also pick up an st-e2. I would love to start playing with three flashes in manual.

I am in the market for a softbox for my 580EX or 430EX. Anyone use one or have good recommendation?

ETA: Budget under $100

First shots with 430ex camera left, shot through an umbrella. Reflector camera right. Additional light from a large north facing window.

How are the Radiopoppers David? Have you tested how far they can reach? Are they anywhere close to pocketwizard's claimed 1600ft maximum distance? Do they fail to trigger the flash sometimes? How reliable are they?

I have a set of AB softboxes that I use in the studio and in all honesty I actually prefer the falloff I get with a shoot through umbrella. Of course the problem there is that I get way to much light bouncing out the back and off the wall when using them in the studio. I've been considering covered umbrellas like Brolly Boxes from AB or the Umbrella Box from Lastolite. You may want to include these modifiers in your search for a 'softbox'.

I don't have any pictures but you can also build those covered brollys with a normal shoot thru **sort of**...... Just put the cover on the wrong way (slide the hole in the cover down the shaft & clip the clips on as normal)and use a different light stand holding the flash pushed thru the opening in the bottom. Cuts light going back a LOT and still have a shoot thru brolly..... Cause you could also buy one of those things

Thanks I will keep the lastolite in mind if my budget goes up. Seems they are over $200

Honestly, I haven't tried them more than about 30 feet from the subject (the right scenario just hasn't come up yet). But about the only time that slave doesn't fire is when I shoot too fast for the slave to recycle. I've now made it standard practice to put Canon's battery pack on the slave to reduce recycle times and am quite happy with what I'm getting.

I was at a reception last Friday which was outdoors ... meaning no walls and no ceiling to bounce light off of. The slave was extremely reliable at firing no matter which direction I was standing and shooting. Sometimes I used the slave as a side light. Sometimes as a kicker light (i.e. back side of the people dancing) and sometimes as a back light just to be different. :)

Last weekend we stayed at a friend's condo on the beach. Here are a few shots of them. Typical strobist setups:

I had a 580EX2 on the camera, and I had two 430EXs being held by my wife and stepson. The ratio was A:B=1:2 with one of the 430s on A and the other on B (so the on camera strobe and one of the 430s combined to provide fill and the other 430 acted as key). That was my theory anyway! The reality was that my family had a hard time keeping the strobes positioned and they often didn't fire. They were real troopers, but next time I think I will just lug out ye ole light stands.

Thanks David. I'll bite soon b/c I want to be totally portable and able to shoot outdoors with them where there's no electricity for powerpacks, etc.

Olympus E3 to FL50 via cable. Does anyone have this set up? I'm just starting, hence the stupid question. The FL-50 flash doesnt have any connection ports. With the olympus cors (hots shoes on both ends) all works fine except it is only one foot long. I got a hot shoe with a short wire ending in a female plug for the flash, then a male to male 15 foot PC cord. Something is wrong with that contraption. It fires only intermittantly, kills the batteries after 15 flashes and when I remove the batteries they are BURNING HOT.

What is wrong and how can I fix it? Am I just dumb for trying cable?

That's where the radiopoppers come in. I hardly ever have a slave not fire now. About the only time it does is if I'm shooting too fast & the slave didn't have time to recycle. That's why I'm using Canon's external battery pack on the slaves now.

Without the radiopopper, the trick is to keep the face of the slave pointed towards the master. You can rotate the head (the flash) back towards the subject, but the face (with the red cover on it) needs to point towards the master. Indoors, with light bouncing off of walls, this isn't as important. But outdoors the flash will often fail without this kind of line-of-sight triggering.

No idea. I use the FL36 with the FL-CB05 or I use it attached with a slave trigger and use either the on camera flash or my studio strobes to trigger it. This is indoors only.

Thanks, next dumb question _ the FL-50 has no plug in ports - do you use a hot shoe adapter?

Never mind - I've got it - there must me some basic Law of the Internet that says "You will figure it out just after you post a stupid question, never before".

Recent photoshoot.
Typical strobist setup:
580EX as master on camera bracket, Fonged.
430EX as slaved key on stand camera left 45ish with shoot through
Reflector against key.
430EX as as slaved kicker/hair light camera right behind models.

Simple and typical shots with almost no editing (even bgs were mostly fine out of camera)

And one with a bit more concept

@ My local hangout. They are brother/sister/cool

580ex on camera bracket as master (fill)
430EX on stand to camera left as slave (key)
1:2 Ratio

I'm planning on following this route here in the next couple weeks. Has anyone had any issues with the cactus triggers (height wise)? I'm looking at getting those, looks like i could get a transmitter and two receivers for $50, so I'll probably follow through with that unless anyone has any major complaints about them.

Wow I completely forgot about this thread. I've done a few shoots since my last post but haven't uploaded any of them. I'll try to do so this week and post them.

Sometimes it doesn't fire, if you are serious about that, and want it to last for a long time and don't want to upgrade soon, I'd suggest Alienbees Cybersyncs '' I have those and I'll be syncing forever '' or you go to the more expensive one.
Cheers,

I had one more quick question. If a sunpak flash is "dedicated" for nikon, can I still use it manually on the cactus trigger with my canon?
