I know we all have our big fancy beast cameras' but does anyone carry a point and shoot when you don't want to carry the DSLR's ? I'm looking to get one, but I haven't really looked at any. Curious if anybody has any recommendations.

thanks,

Absolutely! Even though I have a new Canon XTi since December, my "old" 4MP Konica point-and-shoot KD-400Z goes everywhere with me. The DSLR (especially with the new 70-200 telephoto lens) goes with me when I'm specifically shooting something, but I have the point-and-shoot with me almost everywhere. And frankly, it's scored a number of nice shots for me in the time I've had it... including a red ribbon. With a lot of experience, I can really make it sing.

Even better, when my 8-year old daughter accompanies me when I'm out shooting, she gets to use the P-S and take her own shots.

Paul.

I've been carrying my Olympus D490z with me almost all the time since I joined DPC -- I've had it overall for almost eight years, and take pictures with it several days each week, including some DPC entries.

I got a Canon G9 a few months back and I love it. It has darn near all the features of a DSLR (well, except with a fixed lens) including full manual controls, RAW files, and a hotshoe. I carry it all the time in a belt case when I don't feel like lugging the 30D + lenses around with me.

I normally keep my Powershot S5 in my briefcase going to work and back. It's not quite pocket sized. I have a coolpix L6 that is much more compact, but it does not get much use. If I start bike riding again this year, it will, as it should tuck into a camelbak quite nicely.

I carry a Canon A650 IS when I don't want to carry my Nikon D-200. Mostly on trips where I just looking to document events. I chose the A650 because it is high MP (12) for cropping, has manual settings if I want, has a viewfinder (although pretty limited) and a swivel screen for those shots low or high to the ground.

I will be getting an Olympus Stylus 1030 soon so I can do anything with it and it wont break. I can take it places where my dslr can't go.

it can go 33ft underwater. 6.6ft shockproof, 220lb/ft crush proof, and can operate fine in temperatures as low as -10 C.

I'd say either a G9 for the hotshoe capability, or one of the Oly everything-proof cameras.

Yeah, I have Canon Powershot SD870 IS (USA) / IXUS 860 IS (UK)

It doesn't have the manual control of the G9 but it is much more pocket sized and much lighter which is what I was after from a p&s (as well as being about 30% cheaper). It has a wider angle than most p&s but doesn't zoom as much (28-105mm), I wanted the wider angle as I was most likely to use it when going round cities and the like ... the 3" screen is fantastic

Am really pleased with it, takes some great pictures and as I'm finding the macro setting is actually very good indeed, much better than the screw on macro lenses I bought for the SLR!

Fuji F30

Probably the best performing low light point-and-shoot ever produced. Produces exellent quality shots.

How does the Canon G9 compare to the 30d etc for picture quality?

I really fancy one, especially as it has the hot shoe. Does it have the same sensor circuitry as the DSLRs?

Hmm - Just been looking at the Equipment section for the pics taken with the G7 and G9 at DPC - I am impressed!

I have my A620 with me all the time. It fits nicely in a quiet corner of my camera bag. I figure it's good to have a back-up unit in case the DSLR breaks down.

At low ISO settings, I'd say that the G9 and the 30D are very similar. The G9 has more megapixels, for whatever that's worth. However, at ISO 400 the G9 starts to get noisy and I cannot even imagine how it would be at ISO 1600 - I try to keep mine below ISO 400.

As mentioned before, however, the G9 has a hotshoe so you can attach a Canon flash to light the scene, or a wireless trigger with off-camera strobes. (Point of interest that I just learned: the G9 has E-TTL capability, however in M mode E-TTL is disabled and you have to set the flash power manually. Not hard to do, but somewhat annoying, since E-TTL is enabled in the other modes.)

I have an elph, I carry it ... almost never :(

I'm glad I have it for those "just in case" times, but it gets very little use.

I find the best place for point-and-shoot comparisons is DCResource. Here's there reviews page for the two cameras, including high ISO comparison:

Canon G9

Fuji F30

As for the G9 having more megapixels, this is a disadvantage in low light as point and shoots as you know have to operate on smaller sensors.

Be warned though, when using the hot shoe on the G7/G9, there is a very noticable shutter lag added to the release. The delay makes it all but useless for anything other than still subjects.

I still use my little Minolta Z100 (when I can get it away from my daughter). Minolta is owned by Sony now, but the quality is about the same.
