I've researched a bit but haven't been able to find out. For an alternative to buying a macro lens would there be a way that I could use extension tubes with the fairly inexpensive Canon 50mm F/1.8 and be able to get a true 1:1 macro?

If so how long should the tubes be or how many would I need. Also what brand of extension tubes are recommended... (quality, price, compatibility?)

I'm not sure if it is 1:1 as i have never actually tried it, but you might want to look into reverse mounting the lens on your camera - you can get fairly inexpensive adapters which work with the filter ring on the front of the lens. ebay link

Yep, you sure can. You'll need 50mm of extension to achieve 1 to 1 (you'll actually get more like 1.25 to 1, but that's splitting hairs ;-)
The Kenko tubes are a good bet, less expensive than the Canon tubes. Be sure to get the ones that provide electrical connection. These should be what you would need.

Do be advised that the range of focus distance will be very narrow, so you are essentially selecting your magnification (and thus focus distance) by the tube length you select. The three-tube set allows you to select the length that best suits your immediate need. You wind up with seven possible tube lengths.

Justin,

If you look at the Canon EF LENS Chart ( Google search for eflenschart.pdf ), it will show the magnification of all Canon lens, with the canon extension tube set. This should give you an idea of what combination works for you.

PS Go for the Kenko's as Kenko air, works just as well as Canon air.
