Going to take a plunge on an XSI...it feels about right. The new 18-55 IS kit lens has had some decent reviews, and should be a nice walkabout. I'm thinking I might want some extra reach this summer, what with the kidling starting soccer and all...
Given that, the Future Shop is offering the body and kit lens with a couple of bundled TP options. The first is with a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II USM Lens (I think it's that one, since it's advertised as USM), but for another C-note I could get it with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens. This must be a fairly new lens, there's only three images and 8 owners here so far. Does anyone know the difference between a Canon EF and EF-S designation? I'd also consider a third-party lens, like a Sigma...as long as it's in the same price range as the Canon models...maybe I can convince Henry's to bundle that for me.
Anyone have any opinions they'd care to share?

If I remember correctly the EF will still mount on the old canon 35mm film SLRs but the EF-S will not.

the 75-300 (any of them) don't rate so well ... i'd skip them
the 55-250 is a newer lens and seems to be getting pretty good reviews

The S in EF-S stands for short back focus. The 40D will accept EF-S lenses and EF. On some models it will hit the mirror or something so it has a rubber ring on the back to stop you fitting it to other models. The EF fits all.

| depends on how much money you're willing to spend. I'd go with a 70-200 F4 IS. fantastic lens. Love it! |

there's a 70-200 F4 USM for same right here for $500. That's a great price for a great lens, and you'll get that money back if you ever want to sell it. It might be a little outside what you were wanting to spend but I look at it as there's no point in buying a weaker lens now because you'll just want one like this anyway in about 6 months so save the money from the first lens.

try bhphotovideo.com cause u can pick up the 70-200 f/4 for like 579 new and no tax if u live outside ny (:

| Sigma 70-300 APO DG for about $220 last time I checked. Much better then the Canon versions in that price range. Takes good macros too. |

i wouldn't recommend the Sigma. I got rid of mine 2 weeks ago and hardly ever used it. It's slow slow slow in every department.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm leaning toward the 55-250 IS...that way, at least some of my Challenge entries could end up on it's front page. :-P

Another endorsement from me for the Sigma - the focusing is indeed not the quickest but if you can live with that it's capable of very sharp images and is well-built with solid macro performance. I got one for Christmas as I couldn't think of anything else and I use it far more often than I thought I would.
