Huh?

My mind immediately jumped to the scene in Pulp Fiction where Mr. Pink refuses to put any money into the tip pool.
(hence the quote)

Tipping is not normal in Australia. Appearing in some places but not in rural areas at all. In fact if someone walks into my business and buys something and says keep the change I feel uncomfortable. So I put one of the charity organisation collection boxes near my cash register and let them see that I put any change they give into it. That way it is going towards a good cause.

To be completely honest, I feel a little offended when I feel forced to tip. Tips were really meant as a thank you for exceptional service. Now it seems you are expected to tip just for entering a restaurant.

I have never tipped in my life! Tipping is not very common at all here in NZ. Thank goodness it seems life a minefield of unspoken rules!

You're not forced to tip. Unless you have a large party, there's no service charge added to your bill, and that's what your tip is for.

If you don't tip, you should explain to the manager why you feel a tip is unwarranted. However, if you just want to come off as a cheapskate, just stiff them. You also shouldn't expect good service when and if you return.

We ate in a nice pub in Auckland last Oct. and left a $5 tip on the table. The server came to the door and called out to stop us because we'd "left some money on the table".
When we told her it was for her, a tip, she said, "Are you SURE????" It was a rather refreshing change :)
