So apparently I experienced my first earthquake early this morning. I thought I had perhaps just dreamed it because it woke me up out of a dream. House was shaking just a bit and I remember thinking it was an earthquake, but it didn't last long enought to worry about what to do about it. Local reports say it was a 5.4, which to folks out west is probably just a very small thing. Around here, it was pretty freaky!

It seems to have been centered many miles from here, but it was close enough for me. Anyone else feel it?

I experienced my first earthquake earlier this year - very unusual for the UK. It wasn't very strong but I was sitting still and just shook gently for about 10 seconds. Quite a surreal feeling isn't it?

Wow. That's not good. Didn't feel anything here but I sleep very soundly.
Where was it centered??

I remember one from the 80's when I lived over by Wright Patterson...rattled all the dishes. Very scary.

Living in Japan as I do, I've experienced many tremors. I seem to be able to tell they're happening before other people I'm with.

The New Madrid fault's are scary if you think about it. Three of the four largest earthquakes in the lower 48 has occurred in this area. Heres an excerpt of an 2005 article and a link to it. It will surprise many. Look at the map below how much of the US would be affected by in comparison to the west cost.

----------------------
Midwest record-setters

The infamous series of three New Madrid quakes in 1811-1812 occurred a few weeks apart, from Dec. 16 to Feb. 7. They measured 8.1, 8.0 and 7.8 and represent three of the four strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the lower 48.

"Strong earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone are certain to occur in the future," states a USGS fact sheet. "There is a 9-in-10 chance of a magnitude 6 to 7 temblor occurring in the New Madrid Seismic Zone within the next 50 years." (only 3 years latter)

Notice the prediction of within 50 years. Now go back to the article just release a few days ago about California and what is expected within the next 30 years. If no one seen the article heres the link.

Yep, we're all just floating around on thin, broken up crust. I suggest we all enjoy life, and get as much nooky as possible.

I called my mom in central Illinois -- she said it woke her up, but she didn't know what happened until later in the morning. She said the windows were rattling and she thought maybe a big truck had driven by!

Funny, people don't normally associate earthquakes and the midwest, but remember, there was an earthquake in the 1800's that was so strong it caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards.
