I got a comment too asking me to give up photography and send him my equipment. But he didn't leave a forwarding address. What a fool.... :D

I reported it to SC but asked them not to delete the comment because I wanted the chance to respond to it. I pity someone who feels that they need to use negative comments like that to draw attention to themselves. Very glad he's not part of my social circle - it would be quite depressing to be around someone like that.

A call out to Team Suck - we don't have enough nominees for the Yappie to run the vote for April - 2 more days to go. Anyone got a worthy candidate?

How about ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' aimeethetoo? She gives lots of comments encouraging good shots that don't always score well.

It's actually a lean time for comments. Most seem to come from fresh people who haven't learned not to yet.

I fell off the wagon. It was the P&S side challenge that got me. I was doing so well at weaning myself from the P&S cameras, and was becoming quite comfortable with the XTi. I wasn't getting good scores, but I was hoping that would improve soon. Well, I gave in and have just submitted P&S images to Free Study and Story.

Nothing wrong with p&s pix! Even though my camera is now listed as the Nikon, I still have the Powershot in my purse at all times and get many good shots with it. It's the photog, Julianne, not the camera!!! :-)

Congratulations, Kelli. That's quite an honor. Remind us when the day comes. Or show us which photo it is.

Nope. Just the personal satisfaction (??) of a personal worst. I had mine not too long ago. Got 2nd to last. Something really annoying about second to last. Last would have been SOOOO much nicer! Good luck. And hang in there. :-)

Absolutely! With one I had recently, a Free Study shot, it had gotten down into the 3s to the point that I was actually looking forward to the brown (the whole lemons/lemonade thing) - when it started to go up again, I actually got mad! Missed the brown by 6 or 7 spots. Dang!

I recently got the brown in the DNMC challenge - I'm sure I shouldn't have been quite so pleased with myself!

Exactly how many evil twins do you have??????

Hey all, just want to take a moment to revel in the latest news: at Weight Watchers I hit exactly 30 lbs. down tonight. Yeah. I'm feeling much better about myself right about now.

Wow! Well done. :) You should be very proud of yourself.

I am dreading starting my own weight loss program starting next week at some point. I want to lose about 60 lbs.

Hi all,

I've not been around much; DPC isn't "working" for me, as they say. I've had a few waves of this recently, but given some (not so good) pressures in my personal life lately, I haven't really been sharing what I've been shooting here, though I am still shooting some. While I have been reading this thread, and the posthumous awards thread, too, I've been looking elsewhere, as well. I've tried to find another "place to play" as it were, but nothing else really fits with what I am looking for, either because the sites are too arbitrary, too popularity focused, too unfocused, or have poor terms of membership (one site that looked interesting requires that you give them a license that allows them to edit your photos and use them forever to advertise and promote the site; hmm, how about - no!).

Anyway, in my searching, I came across what I think is a pretty excellent series of "lessons" on photographic composition. It starts here:

Can Composition be Taught?

Here is a bit from the introduction, and hopefully this will show why I like it (I haven't finished the whole thing, but I have already learned stuff from what I've read):

Originally posted by Petteri Sulonen:

A photographer whom I admire a great deal, Ed Leys (see his work at California Light and Structure) feels very strongly that composition can't and shouldn't be taught at all. He believes that "teaching composition" imposes arbitrary and artificial constraints on creativity, and as a worst case could stifle the flame and vision of a creative genius, thereby making the world a poorer place. While I don't entirely agree with him, for reasons I'll discuss below, I think he makes a valuable point.

The dilemma of "teaching composition" is that there's no way to do it meaningfully without imposing rules or constraints, and it's all too easy to get caught up in these rules or constraints, and mistake them for standards of excellence. Inevitably, the acquisition of these "rules" will shape the vision and photography of the person learning them. This can well detract from the individual quality of the work. The fact remains that a picture composed "by the book" is simply a picture that has been skilfully composed "by the book." Whether it's interesting or evocative or has artistic power or not has nothing to do with it.

However, I'm not as pessimistic as Ed. I happen to be lucky enough to know a few people with genuine artistic talent -- that inner fire that manifests itself in a need to create highly individual, unusual, even visionary work. None of them would be able to express that vision without having acquired the craft. At some point, all of them went through the constraints of doing stuff "by the book," and as often as not, this served as a useful framework to rebel against and break. In my experience, genuine artistic vision is anything but fragile -- on the contrary, it's the kind of fire that will burn through stone and steel to express itself. Check out a Picasso retrospective: he was doing beautifully composed and executed drawings and paintings in the academic style -- when he was fourteen. And I have a sneaky feeling that he wouldn't have produced Guernica had he not done those figure studies in art school.

There's something about his way of approaching this, providing lessons almost solely so that you can break the very rules he's teaching you in the lessons, that really appeals to me right now. I could use some more tools to be able to express what I want to express, there are times I can't get my camera to show me what I see. I hope some of you find it useful, and I'll be around here, even if I'm quiet.

Best,

Rob

thanks, robert -that is exactly the approach in which i was taught, and use in my teaching. you must learn the rules, and learn them well, then you can break them with impunity. the BFA i did had two years of strict structure and highly representational study, then two years of 'do whatever you want, just make lots of it and be able to justify it with well reasoned argument.' we turned out a lot of very good artists (one had work bought by the Canada Art Bank from his graduating show) who are still working in the field - in fact most of my graduating class are working artists. this is the approach i use now, and my students (adults) really appreciate it. they say having the grounding in the technicals frees them to be more creative, as they don't have to think about getting it right, rather how to change things.

sorry, little rant, over now...

got a fave from timfy on my free study. woohoo!
