I watched this here in the UK on Saturday night. Not my sort of program but Ecce Signum and I were on our way back from Mull and the hotel only had 4 channels...this program was the best of the 4! We had laughed through most of the acts and then this young lad came on...WOW! Although Andi managed to talk his way through the act it had me in tears...what an amazing voice!

Wow. Thank you for posting that.

Of course, I can't hear it, so I don't know what the fuss is about. But obviously the judges are completely wowed, and the kid looks sweet. Anyone want to tell me more?

Sorry, Robert - I was about to add that it wouldn't do you any good to have a look. The kid is 13, kinda shy, and sings a very short bit of opera with a voice that can move you to tears. Amazing. And in a way, kinda sad, since he won't have that voice for long. Hopefully he'll still keep a nice tenor after puberty. Edit to add - it's one of those competition shows, like American Idol, only in the UK, where I believe they were doing it first anyway - that whole competition show thing. And I think they stole it from the Japanese... Of course, I haven't watched television for years, so I don't know for sure. :)

There are solutions for that, you know...

Or become the first modern castrato singer? BTW, there's a fine historical novel about the castrati by Anne Rice, "Cry to Heaven", that actually moved me to tears...

Pie Jesu is one of my all time favorites to just listen to. He did beautifully. Thanks for sharing this!!

I've read the book by Rice and it's a good book - and based on the truth of that day, albeit fictionalized to tell the tale. But I do admit that after I heard him this morning, I wondered if the castrati still exist.... His voice is really that good. Or perhaps it's just that we so rarely get to hear the crystalline soprano of a boy before his voice changes...

Bear here is my attempt to tell you what it was like as it was so good.

Imagine the highest waterfall that you can, and there is 1 single thin stream coming down in the most perfect straight line. The sun is beaming on it and it is crystal clear. You can imagine a perfect silver line all the way to the bottom of the waterfall.

When it reaches the bottom of the water fall, there is an angel sitting there, this pure silver straight line is making his wings with each drop.

He spreads his wings and the whitest light you can bear to look at shines from each feather. He flaps his wings once and soars up through the sky with each beat of his wings you feel a heart beat.

pretty much a 10 out of 10 photograph for you

he is great, but he is 13 and his voice is sure to change right? can he sing that way once his voice changes?
04/15/2008 02:13:42 PM · #15
GWE, no he will not be able to sing that way.

right now before his voice breaks and he really gets into puberty, he will hae this voice. Once his voice matures, he may find that he is mezzo soprano, alto or tenor.

you can never really tell.

I remember this one lad who was in the top 3 in the world competition for his age the finals where the next day. He had worked his whole little life for this. That night his voice broke. Broke my heart and probably his too.

It isn't opera actually, it's boys' soprano choral, what you might hear with Gregorian chant for example. The singing was beautiful, the show schmalzy. :-P

Thanks for the correction - my knowledge is limited to "oh, I like that!" in most cases. And yes, the show is schmalzy. According to what I read on the internet, all of television is that way these days. Which is why all I watch are certain sporting events. I'm sure there are good shows on somewhere. Right?

Puleeeze, Louis....it's Lloyd-Weber....it's Cats gone liturgical. The Pie Jesu is the best part.

There are Counter-tenors working today who are not castrati. They have highly developed falsettos.

And the Johnston lad sang pitch perfect and beautifully. Looks like this year's Paul Potts.

Re: JulietNN. I used to be a male soprano and took private classical lessons starting at 5. A male voice never turns into a mezzo soprano or alto, there is not such thing. It really is dependent on his physical size after his growth spurt. I ended up being a tenor and continued singing. If I were 6' it would be unlikely. Same general rule will apply to him. If he is stout he will likely be a tenor.

Thank you for posting this.. he is obviously a pretty troubled young man who can see a not so bright future for himself if he stays where he is. Apart from his fabulous singing he has a great mum and looks like he comes from a warm loving home. He will go far.
